History of Heinkel He 219 Uhu (Owl)
The advanced Heinkel He 219 "Uhu" (meaning "Owl") was a powerful night fighter platform that served the interests of the Third Reich during World War II - albeit in limited numbers. Despite being a capable aircraft and proven in combat, a number of factors have adversely affected this fine machine and prevented the He 219 from achieving any measure of quantitative utility. There are fewer than 300 manufacturers of this type, and they come in many different forms. In recorded operations, the He 219 demonstrated an impressive ability to eliminate enemy bombers at night, but ultimately due to its technical sophistication and - like other promising Luftwaffe machines - internal disagreements and German authorities of general indecision and frustration.
The Uhu made several "firsts" during its short production life - it was the first Luftwaffe aircraft to be equipped with three-wheel landing gear (all aircraft at the time were of the "tail-trail" type) and became the first Luftwaffe aircraft with three-wheeled landing gear. Comes with standard AI radar deployment. In addition, the He 219 was the first combat aircraft in the world to use an ejection seat for its crew. In total, about 294 examples of He 219 Uhu were made (some sources give only 268).
Their impact on the RAF nighttime bombing raids was minimal at best, but a glimpse into what could have happened.
Internal struggle
German general Josef Kammhuber served as an experienced "night fighter general" in the Luftwaffe during World War II and is credited with creating the first truly effective defensive night fighter system known as the "Night Fighter General". Camhuber Line". Although this development was deciphered and ultimately defeated by the RAF, it demonstrated the need for such a defense.
On the other side of the table sits Field Marshal Erhard Milch, an officer who served as director of the RLM (Reich Air Force) during World War II. After Germany's defeat and subsequent disbandment in World War I, Milch oversaw the rearmament of the Luftwaffe.
The two soon found themselves at odds, and these conflicts continued during their respective tenures until Kammhuber was ousted in 1943. Before the relocation, General Kammhuber was convinced that Germany needed night fighter defense and contracted to produce the He 219.
However, due to its complexity and cost, Milch decided to scrap this particular project and opted for other more viable projects. This eventually led to a final showdown, with Kammhuber being moved to an outdated battlegroup outpost in distant Norway.
Kamhuber survived the war to the end, eventually returning to the nascent Luftwaffe as a Luftwaffe inspector between 1956 and 1962.
Against this background, the development of the Uhu was questioned from the start, although the type showed an ability comparable to its British counterpart - the de Havilland DH. 98 Mosquitoes.
Few German aircraft at the time could rival British twin-engine fighters, and all other night combat aircraft used by the Luftwaffe were mostly outdated fighters of little daytime value. The He 219 clearly fills an obvious need.
Origin of Owl
The
He 219 originated from a private company in Heinkel specializing in high-speed, high-altitude bomber design, the prototype designation P.1055, which appeared in paper form sometime in 1940. The bomber will feature pop-up crew seats (a first for any aircraft), fully retractable tricycle landing gear (a first for any German aircraft) and a cockpit pressure system for working at heights. Additionally, this type would be defended by remote-controlled defensive turrets - an approach that became standard on advanced advanced bombers such as the massive Boeing B-29 Superfortress by the end of the war.
The P. 1055 has an estimated top speed of 470 miles per hour and a range of 2,500 miles, both of which are very impressiveat least on paper. Although the original design and several subsequent revisions to that design were rejected by the RLM as "technically too complex", Heinkel modified the P.1055 to the P.1060 when General Kammhuber expressed interest in stocking a dedicated night fleet.

In 1941, nighttime bombing raids by the RAF began to cause damage to Germany's war machine infrastructure, necessitating the Luftwaffe's reactive action. The new Heinkel P. 1060 design was submitted to the RLM in January 1942, but the Junkers Ju 88 variant and the Messerschmitt Me 210 design pushed by General Milch were selected. In any case, Heinkel continued private development of his P. 1060 for the time being, and after a long delay in procuring the required Daimler-Benz engines, the final prototype was revealed in November. The first flight took place on November 6, 1942, and the results proved promising, although some inherent stability issues needed to be addressed.
Weapons have also been modified. General Kammhuber saw the completed prototype fly on November 19 and quickly worked to secure production orders, despite orders to the contrary from General Milch. Later evaluations of a second prototype enabled the model to compete in simulated air combat with the Dornier Do 217N twin-engine night fighter and Junkers Ju 88S high-speed bomber.
The He 219 triumphed in both aircraft categories. Production of the He 219 A-0 (now known as "Uhu") began, and the aircraft was officially admitted to the ranks of the Luftwaffe in 1943.
Owl in action
The excitement surrounding the He 219 was that officials quickly put them into service as pre-production prototypes. The He 219 A-0 was first deployed in April 1943 with I/NJG 1 (Nachtjagergeschwader) from Venlo, The Netherlands, with an order of around 300 Uhus (General Kammhuber eventually envisioned around 2,000 in his stables). During one night of operation on 11 June 1943, German Major Werner Streeb was responsible for shooting down no fewer than five RAF Lancaster heavy bombers in just 30 minutes.
Although the rate of fire of cannon weapons is generally slower compared to machine guns, their devastating destructive capabilities are undeniable. Heavy airborne guns against lightly armoured British bombers quickly reduced the fuselage to a Swiss cheese look.
A single shell is often enough to severely damage a single engine, a nightmare for enemy bomber pilots and aircrews alike. The He 219's powerful weapons are on full display, as is the onboard advanced interceptor radar. Although Streeb successfully dispatched Uhu on its first sortie, its landing was disrupted by unresponsive flaps, forcing it to overrun the runway.
His He 219 crashed and split into three main parts. Fortunately, he and his radar operator escaped with minor injuries.
On only six missions in total, the He 219 crew was able to confirm the effectiveness of the Uhu-designed night fighter, out of a total of about 20 enemy aircraft, including six from the legendary British de Havilland DH. 98 Mosquito twin-engine, two-person night fighter.
By all accounts, the He 219 is pretty cheap for pilots and ground crew alike. It seems that an unshakable legacy is emerging.
Begin end
Despite the promise of the He 219 Uhus base, the type has never seen service in viable quantities. Some German authorities remain skeptical of the use of large fighter platforms - even though the RAF often has ground losses on a nightly basis.
Therefore, several seemingly time-consuming developments were constructed to further validate and test the design. At this point, DH. The 98 Mosquito evolved far beyond the Uhu's original abilities, so an improved He 219 was needed.
This "improved" Owl will have a more powerful engine and fewer weapons to offset a better overall top speed, at least comparable to the British Mosquito.
Further delays were soon welcomed by the potential range of the He 219, General Milch, who oversaw all aircraft production in the Luftwaffe, persuaded the Luftwaffe to focus on the development of the Junkers Ju 388J "Stortebeker" heavy fighter, while Not to focus on and the night fighter Focke-Wulf Ta 154 "Mosquito". As always, both designs are equally promising on paper, but tell different stories in practice. The Ju 388 came online late in the war, and due to production problems, only 69 prototypes were delivered.
Likewise, the Ta 154 arrived late in the war with limited production due to poor performance (even below its prototype) and inherent structural flaws, resulting in only 50 examples being available.
The He 219 A-5 is a proposed three-person Uhu design that exists only in prototype form and is based on the A-2.
The He 219 A-6 was designed as a dedicated "mosquito" aircraft, lighter than its previous form, armed with only 4 x 20mm MG 151/20 cannons. The A-6 also removed some radio communications equipment to reduce its overall load and thus improve performance - especially at top speeds.
These modifications allowed the A-6 to reach speeds of nearly 400 miles per hour at high altitudes.
The He 219 A-7 was a modification of the basic night fighter already in service and eventually became the last production version of the Uhu. Armament consists of 2 x 30 mm Mk 108 cannons at the base of the wings, 2 x 30 mm Mk 103 and 2 x 20 mm MG 151/20 cannons in the weapon racks under the fuselage and 2 x 30 mm Mk 108 cannons under the fuselage The rear of the cockpit is arranged along the cradle music in the upper part of the fuselage.
Typically, Uhus' MK 103 guns are eliminated on the battlefield in order to maintain substantial operational weight and maximum speed. The A-7 was powered by two 1,900-horsepower Daimler-Benz DB 603E series in-line piston engines, of which approximately 210 were ordered by the end of 1944.
He 219B
The He 219B was the next logical evolution of the He 219 series, but never saw any further development. The B model will be used with a Junkers Jumo 222A/B series engine rated at 2,200 hp for an estimated speed of 440 mph. A wide-span wing (up to 72 feet) enables high-altitude performance.
The B-type exists in only a few "dumb" forms, either the existing A-type with a developed wide-span wing, or a variant with a different high-power engine configuration. In any case, the He 219B should not go down in history.
He 219C
The He 219C is another anticipated evolution of the He 219 series. This will be a three-person fuselage, using the aforementioned wide-span wing arrangement for high-altitude performance, and Junkers Jumo 222 series engines.
The fuselage will be an entirely new product, making room for a crew member's rear-drive tail turret. Despite plans and building materials provided, the He 219C was not even completed as a prototype, and the required Jumo engine was never supplied.
He 219E
The He 219E, which exists only in paper form, is a proposed ultra-high-altitude "Stalker" with a larger wingspan of up to 93.5 feet. The engine will be a Daimler-Benz DB 614 series powerplant, reportedly based on the DB 603C series, with the new system rated at around 2,000 horsepower.
The He 219E became one of many Third Reich "paper projects" that never had a working prototype.
Existing Eagle Owls
219 A-2 "Uhu" (Wekummer 290202) was brought to the continental United States by the British Royal Navy ship HMS Reaper sometime in 1945. Her restored fuselage is now on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Haze Center near Dulles Airport, while her wings are still being restored.
She represents one of the few surviving eagle owls today - a small testament to her limited legacy.
The He 219 was also captured by the British after the war and was assessed and photographed in RAF colours.
Conclusion
With so much work to do against owls, it's a miracle that nearly 300 systems were produced. Internal infighting certainly played a role in the aircraft's limited range, and whether the He 219 would have any impact on the RAF's deadly night bombing raids is left to the imagination. The He 219 equipped the Luftwaffe with many other available aircraft programs that were destined to never achieve their potential.
In its current form, the heart of the He 219 is a promising design that has withstood the test of time through its limited service and has grown in its legacy only through the words of its staff. Furthermore, owls played only a small role in what is now the extensive defense of the German homeland.
If the German authorities were consistent in their purpose and fate, the Uhu might have played a greater role in prolonging the war in the Reich's favor -- and at the same time, more powerful jet engine designs of German origin emerged.
