The Story of Hermeus Mach 5

Hermeus has come up with its own approach to supersonic passengers. The Atlanta-based startup is eyeing a project to launch a Mach 5, near-supersonic-capable long-haul VIP/business traveler platform by the end of the next decade. The promised high-speed performance means a flight from New York City to Paris is only a 90-minute flight.

By comparison, traditional airlines can complete the transatlantic route in about seven hours.

In its current design form, the proposed aircraft has an estimated cruise speed of 3,300 miles per hour and a range of up to 4,600 miles. Inside, the plane is expected to comfortably carry about 20 passengers at speeds just below hypersonic speeds (up to Mach 5).

The proposed air-breathing propulsion scheme is said to combine a turbojet/turbofan and a ramjet/scramjet.

Published images of the proposed aircraft feature a sleek design with a pointed section, a flat underside and a streamlined top half. The propulsion scheme is centered on the rear abdominal segment of the fuselage. The main-wing aircraft is elegantly integrated into the aircraft fuselage and has a downwardly sloping tip.

The fin consists of two vertical fins located above the drive assembly. The tricycle landing gear has two wheels on each leg for ground operation, takeoff and landing maneuvers.

Since the project is still in its infancy, it is expected that the plane's shape will change significantly if the plan comes to fruition.

The company has secured seed funding for its ambitious project from Khosla Ventures. Hermeus' current project partners include Khosla Ventures, ANSYS and Pointwise. Hermeus is made up of former members of Generation Orbit who have done a lot of work on the X-60A rocket-powered test vehicle.

Its board members are industry veterans with previous ties to the likes of defense giant Lockheed Martin and Blue Origin.
