For decades, the Iranian aviation industry has struggled to meet local demands on Iranian services. This has led to various initiatives, some of which have been successful while others have more or less failed. The HESA Dorna ("Crane") is an inconclusive aircraft - only a handful have been built since its launch in 2006.
It was made available for public consumption as early as 1999.
The Dorna is modeled after the two-seater advanced trainer of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF). A rather conventional shape was obtained, with split air intakes (along the sides of the fuselage), main aircraft with swept wings and a tandem cockpit facing the tip of the sloping nose.
The tail has a vertical fin with a horizontal plane visible near its base. The landing gear is retractable and consists of three monowheel legs.
