Wind tunnel testing of the MC-21 design took place at the end of 2015, although delays in the composite wing in turn delayed the MC-21 program as a whole by several months, meaning it was not expected until mid-2015 The launch is therefore scheduled to fly by the end of 2016. A prototype MC-21 is currently undergoing final assembly in Irkutsk (February 2016).
Russian airline Aeroflot has signed 50 aircraft, while Irkut claims to have received orders from airlines (mostly Russia) totalling around 276 (of which 175 are considered firm orders).
The initial commercial model is expected to be in the MC-21-300ER form with 160-210 seats, with certification planned sometime in 2017 or 2018 (2018 more likely). Other upcoming versions include the MC-21-200ER, a smaller variant that seats up to 175 passengers, and the MC-21-400ER.
The MC-21 program was originally called "MS-21".
