History
Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) in South Korea designed, developed and produced the "Naraon" (comparable in many respects to the Cirrus SR-22) for the light aircraft category. The aircraft first flew on July 15, 2011, and mass production began in 2015.
Since then, two different forms have appeared, the four-seat light multi-purpose aircraft "KC-100" and the military flight trainer "KT-100".
The KC-100 was KAI's first civilian airspace product, a departure from purely military design. Construction work began in 2008, and the aforementioned first flight was recorded in 2011. Type approval followed in March 2013. The series received its first major order after the Korean Air Force (ROKAF) took delivery of the KT-100, following an inventory of Russian Ilyushin IL-103 series trainers for cadet training.
The KT-100 is now in the service's inventory of active aircraft (23 as of July 2019).
The Naraon has a very traditional layout, with the engine in the bow area, the passenger area behind the stern, and the tapered fuselage section ending at the empennage. The stern uses a single rudder and the water level is set low.
The wing main aircraft is mounted low on the side of the fuselage, with a straight design with truncated ends. The tricycle chassis is fixed/fly-proof, and each wheel has an aerodynamic shell.
There is room for four people inside. Structurally, dimensions include a barrel length of 27.10 feet, a wingspan of 37.3 feet, and a height of 9.4 feet. Curb weight is 2,400 lbs and MTOW is 3,600 lbs. Power comes from a 315 hp Continental TSIOF-550-K (FADEC) engine driving the Hartzell three-blade composite nose propeller unit.
Performance specs include a top speed of 242 mph and a range of up to 1,380 miles.
