History
"Fifth generation fighter" - along with "drone" - is a buzzword in the current aerospace and defense industry. The 5th generation fighter jet is a technological marvel that combines the capabilities of modern 4th and 4th generation mounts in widespread use today with powerful tracking and engagement facilities, advanced avionics, high-end engine mounts, agile performance, composite structures etc., are designed to go beyond inherent stealth to dominate the battlefield. To date, there is only one operational 5th-generation fighter in the sky the U.S. air superiority fighter Lockheed F-22 Raptor although there have been several important developments in Russia and China since then. The US is the undisputed leader in weapons testing (2012) with its F-22 and upcoming Lockheed F-35 Lightning II, while China's Chengdu J-20 is strategically exposed through propaganda, Russia's Soviet Union The Hoy PAK FA saw it in flight for the first time.
India is jointly developing a locally produced version of the PAK FA with the Russians and has announced a joint venture in Turkey. Fifth-generation Japanese fighter jets (Mitsubishi ATD-X) advance.
Instead, their South Korean counterparts, known as the "KF-X" program, are facing conundrums in both the political and economic realms.

Two designs, "KF-X-101" and "KF-X-102", compete for overall rights to the KF-X program. The KF-X-101 is a traditional single-engine layout, while the KF-X-102 is a twin-engine layout with delta wings and front canards.
The KF-X-101 would be cheaper and less technologically advanced (though therefore less capable) in development and production, while the KF-X-102 would provide the performance needed for interception and air superiority sorties. They are more complex and expensive to produce in the required quantities. The first production of about 130 aircraft is expected to go to South Korea and Indonesia, with Indonesia getting 50 of them due to early financial participation.

To date, however, there have been many hurdles in bringing the KF-X to light. Due to the state-of-the-art technology, production, and costs involved in the final product, there are serious doubts about the viability of the South Koreans (even at home) to implement such a large-scale intensive program without any anticipated assurances. However, the risk of the initiative failing could set the South Korean air defense industry back years in its goal of overtaking North Korea (and China, which is already developing two advanced fighter jets).
As it turns out, amid the upcoming election and further budget woes, the South Korean Air Force has decided to buy other foreign aircraft designs, including additional F-16s, F-35s, Saab Gripen, Eurofighter Typhoons or French Dassault Rafale - the latter Recently selected by the Indian Navy.
