History of Kamov Ka-25 (hormone)

The Kamov Ka-25 (NATO codename "hormones") was developed from the Ka-20, itself a response to the Soviet Navy's request for carrier-based helicopters to augment the aging Mil Mi-4 platform replacement. The Ka-25 became a mainstay of Soviet surface ships during the Cold War and played a major role in anti-submarine warfare for decades.

The aircraft has since been replaced by the more powerful Ka-32 series, another Kamov design.

The Kamov Ka-25 is a highly known helicopter for a number of reasons. Most notable are the two main rotors, which are mounted coaxially, eliminating the need for tail rotors.

The elimination of the tail rotors commonly found on traditional helicopters means the Ka-25 can be built to a shorter specification - an invaluable feature considering the storage on Navy warships. In addition, the robust hull design and three-fin stern are clear hallmarks of the Kamov design.

The Ka-27, Ka-28, Ka-29, Ka-31 and Ka-32 continue this basic look.

Crew accommodation is a pilot and a co-pilot sitting side by side in front. With appropriate equipment, the cabin can accommodate up to 12 passengers. Traditionally, the system has been designed for naval operations in the form of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and search and rescue (SAR) operations, meaning that cabin space is used for special equipment.

Armament may vary by mission, but traditionally the Ka-25 is set up to carry two air-to-surface torpedoes and/or conventional and nuclear depth charges.

No less than 450 Ka-25s were produced and delivered to the USSR and Ukraine along with India and Syria. The type is gradually withdrawing from front-line service in the Russian Navy, although it may continue to be used in other navies.

The Ka-25BSh stands for the dedicated ASW variant and the Ka-25PS stands for the Hormone branded dedicated SAR variant.
