West Sichuan N1K-J Shiden (George) Story
Despite some initial design setbacks, the Kawasaki N1K1-J "Shiden" (or "Purple Flash" - Allied codename "George") was a model fighter that could even compete with the legendary American F6F Hellcat series comparable. Fighting from a land base, the Shiden, with its powerful engines, streamlined hull and powerful weapons, provided the Japanese army with a swift and formidable opponent in the latter stages of the Pacific War.
Despite its success, the system has only been used on more than 1,400 examples, which somewhat limits its coverage and overall potential.
The
Kawanishi Design Office is already working on a multi-purpose seaplane and sees an opportunity to extend this design to a land-based variant. Using the same developed airframe, the N1K1-J was born from the existing N1K1 seaplane and is equipped with an all-new Nakajima radial piston engine and a newly developed landing gear system.
The N1K1-J prototype premiered in late 1942 and production began the following year.
Kawanishi made a very sleek, almost featureless design for a streamlined body. The wings are low-positioned monoplanes, positioned below and forward of the high-positioned cockpit, providing good visibility. The engine is located forward of the cockpit with a large propeller hub and matching fairing.
All vertical and horizontal surfaces are curved and straight-sided, which undoubtedly contributes to the functionality of the system. Power comes from a Nakajima NK9H Homare 21 radial piston engine producing a whopping 1,990 horsepower. Performance stats report a top speed of 363 mph, a service ceiling near 20,000 feet, and a range of up to 890 miles. Armament consists of a pair of 7.7mm Type 97 machine guns in the nose hood and 4 x 20mm cannons attached to the wings.
Later models will include provisions for external bomb carriers under the wings, adding to the aircraft's already formidable armament.
The initial results for Shiden's entry into the fray were mixed, as it turned out that the powerplant needed more attention. In addition, with the new structural elements on the existing airframe, new problems arose, such as the landing gear system (which apparently does not exist in the seaplane design). When it comes to combat, however, the Shiden's design never fails, proving to be more competitive than its American counterparts.
Three subsequent variants of the base series N1K1-J were produced, dealing with different weapon arrangements and bomb loads. An "improved" model of the N1K1-J was formed in the N1K1-2 series and addressed the aforementioned engine and landing issues as well as other subtle design elements.
By the end of the war, Shiden had made a name for himself as at least one of Japan's top three fighter jets of the war.
