History of the Kawasaki P-1

Maritime patrols remain an extremely important aspect of national defense, especially for island nations like Japan, especially given China's growing power in the region. To date, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) has relied on the U.S.-originated Lockheed P-3 Orion (P-3C variant) system for this role, although the product was introduced in the early 1960s. In search of a more modern platform - in the absence of a real viable option for foreign suppliers - Japanese authorities sought a domestic product, and this was the Kawasaki P-1.

The first flight (XP-1) of the line was recorded on September 28, 2007 and is currently (February 2014) under development. The first two units were handed over to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in March 2013.

Testing revealed several notable issues that have so far hindered wider adoption and use.

At the heart of the P-1 is a four-engine jet maritime reconnaissance platform equipped with the latest intelligence tracking/gathering/interpretation. Overall, the design features a very traditional layout, with a forward cockpit, a streamlined tubular fuselage and a single-blade empennage (with a matching fin).

The main wing assembly is a low swept monoplane, each wing has a pair of underslung nacelles housing two IHI Corporation XF7-10 series turbofan engines.

For maritime patrol requirements, the P-1 will be equipped with a state-of-the-art Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar system (Toshiba HPS-106). Combining multiple onboard detection systems, the P-1 will be able to track and identify a variety of threats both underwater and underwater, including looting enemy submarines, and share this information with gun operators, accompanying attack units, or observers at other forward positions . From there, the P-1s were also granted support for their own ammunition delivery capabilities to strike targets.

In fact, there will be a 20,000-pound option to carry ordnance such as torpedoes, mines, depth charges, anti-ship and air-to-surface missiles. Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) suites provide self-protection against threats to aircraft.

The typical crew of the P-1 platform consists of two pilots and up to 11 mission specialists.

Installed XF7-10 Series IHI turbofans have 13,500 lbs of thrust each and can reach a top speed of 620 mph with a cruising speed of nearly 515 mph. Range is 45,000 miles and service is capped at 44,200 feet.

Since 2013, approximately 10 devices have been purchased for testing and evaluation. Once the aircraft has completed all the necessary stages, it will become a permanent fixture on the Japanese defense screen, coinciding with several notable next-generation designs.
