History of the Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon

The General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) F-16 Fighting Falcon is a product of Cold War development and was introduced on the principles of agility, light weight, and cost control - a form of air superiority A coexisting multirole fighter - the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. The F-16 first flew on January 20, 1974, and was officially unveiled on August 17, 1978. So far, more than 4,500 aircraft have been produced and sold to more than 25 companies. Modernization programs have helped improve the F-16, bringing entirely new capabilities to the modern battlefield and enabling the system to maintain a viable presence in today's highly computer-controlled airspace.

Its versatility allows standard aircraft designs to fill a variety of roles as needed, and its customizability allows each operator to deploy local weapons, systems and equipment as needed.

Although the F-16 was named "Fighting Falcon", the F-16 was also known as "Viper". Following today's classification conventions, the F-16 is considered a "fourth generation fighter" after the Lockheed F-22 Raptor officially ushered in the "fighter generation" era.

However, the costs associated with Gen 5 models mean that many Gen 4 models will continue to fly into the 2030s.

The F-16 is expected to be replaced in US service (and probably elsewhere) by the much-hyped Lockheed F-35 Lightning II, which was designed to be stealthy. However, increasing delays and cost overruns in the program have extended the useful life of existing fourth-generation fighter jets (such as the F-16) in the near future, leading to various modernization programs to keep the aircraft flying for years to come.

In addition, the acquisition costs associated with the new technology will make the F-16 a mainstay for foreign air forces for the foreseeable decade and beyond.

Eagle Root

The F-16 originated from the USAF's Light Fighter (LWF) program, which emerged in the early 1970s. The program was designed to validate the prospects of a light, single-engine, single-seat fighter against the heavier twin-engine design specifications that proved the reputation of the time. The field initially included submissions from Boeing, General Dynamics, Lockheed, LTV and Northrop, but eventually narrowed down to the two major players in General Dynamics and Northrop. General Dynamics compared their "YF-16" to Northrop's "YF-17" and both prototypes were approved for competition. The YF-16 first flew on January 20, 1974, and differed from the Northrop design in its single-engine approach (the YF-17 used two side-by-side).

After a year of evaluation, the USAF officially selected the YF-16 as their LWF winner, and the production mount took on the F-16's final designation, earning it the "Fighting Falcon" moniker (the YF-17 eventually evolved into the chosen for the U.S. Navy's F/A-18 Hornet in another follow-up program).

After the US Air Force ordered the start of production in 1975, the aircraft was also adopted by European parties in US interests. These include Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway, which have agreed to produce the type locally.

The first production-quality F-16 made its maiden flight in 1978, marking the beginning of what is now a legendary aviation career.

The F-16 was the first production-grade military fighter jet with fly-by-wire (FBW) control when it was introduced. This is combined with a "slack" fuselage design to maximize the onboard digital processing scheme and greatly improve responsiveness.

F-16 Tour

Externally, the F-16 becomes a sleek, streamlined aircraft with extensive gradients in the wings and fuselage. The pilot sits in a fuselage-length cockpit, which is positioned forward, with an impressive view of the surroundings through a large, unobstructed canopy.

The cockpit includes a Hand Throttle and Stick (HOTAS) configuration (side stick controls) for efficient control, and a significantly reclined (30-degree) ejection seat. A radar system is housed in the nose cone, which is linked to the ship's systems and arsenal. The main wing attachment swept along its leading edge, and each wingtip carried an AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missile. The tail consists of a vertical tail and a pair of horizontal planes.

There are ventral strakes below the tail. The engine is buried deep in the fuselage, sucked in through a slender air intake under the cockpit, and expelled through a ring at the base of the tail rudder. Each main wing supports multiple gun hardpoints, with the innermost one designated for fuel storage. The centerline hardpoint also proved useful, it was also detected, and helped the aircraft significantly expand its operating range. The layout of the chassis is rather cramped and everything is belly-centric.

The landing gear consists of three single wheel legs, two main legs below the center mass and a front leg just behind and below the cockpit.

In terms of armament, the F-16 is armed with a six-barreled Gatling 20mm M61 Vulcan inner cannon for close range work. Ultimately, in addition to its typical wingtip missile armament, the aircraft supports medium-range air-to-air missiles, air-to-surface missiles, precision-guided munitions, and conventional delivery weapons (cluster bombs, universal bombs, runway blocking weapons, ETC... ).

All in all, the F-16 has evolved into a proven, multi-faceted war machine, enabling it to perform a wide variety of mission types - from interception to patrol, from all-out strike to anti-radar. Foreign buyers are also adding localized ordnance options to the existing F-16 weapons suite to allow for a more customized way of warfare.

In addition to specified weapon options, the F-16 supports mission-specific equipment such as electronic countermeasures (ECM) pods, targeting pods, sensor pods, and chaff/flare dispenser pods. The original radar was the Westinghouse (Northrop Grumman) APG-66 series.

F-16 Mature

The F-16 has evolved into many variants since its inception. The original single-seat multi-role models were the F-16A, and these were complemented by two-seat F-16B models with the addition of a second cockpit. Improved forms appeared in 1984 as the F-16C and F-16D (one- and two-seat models, respectively). These improve avionics and radar capabilities, as well as "all-weather" capability and ground-strike quality. Support for the new medium-range AIM-120 "AMRAAM" air-to-air missile gives the aircraft a beyond-visual-range (BVR) engagement/kill capability.

The rear wing has been extended slightly forward, and a new wide-angle HUD has been introduced. Production of the F-16 spanned several noteworthy "blocks," each containing its own modifications. The C/D models also form the F-16N/TF-16N mounts used for US Navy aggressor training.

The popular F-16C "Block 50" model is powered by a single General Electric F110-GE-100 series afterburner turbofan engine, producing 17,150 pounds of dry thrust and 28,600 pounds of thrust, with reheat applied. The aircraft can reach speeds of 915 miles per hour (sea level, March 1) and can reach speeds in excess of Mach 2 at altitude. The shuttle had a range of 2,600 miles (with fuel tanks attached), and a combat radius of about 350 miles with a relatively heavy bomb load.

Capable of providing a service ceiling of 50,000 feet at a climb rate of 50,000 feet per minute, the airframe is a rugged, responsive interceptor.

The F-16 E and F models (one- and two-seat versions, respectively) are the other offerings and feature the more powerful afterburner engines of the F110-132 series. They are also equipped with AN/APG-80 AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar and state-of-the-art avionics.

This particular model line formed the basis for the "F-16IN" ("Super Viper"), which was originally designed for India's MRCA (Medium Multi-Role Combat Fighter) program but eventually dropped out of the competition. The similar designation F-16I refers to a two-seat development used by the Israeli Air Force.

F-16 Operator

The F-16 has been in service with many non-US Air Forces since its arrival. Sourcing and some local production are entrusted to allies in Belgium, Egypt, Greece, Indonesia, Israel, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand and Turkey. The nascent Iraqi Air Force recently committed to buying F-16 Fighting Falcons for its revitalized product portfolio (announced in September 2010).

The planes will be named "F-16IQ". The Japanese Air Force relied on a heavily modified, larger and locally produced version of the F-16 known as the Mitsubishi "F-2". The Korean F-16, known as the "KF-16", is locally built by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI).

Italy leased as many as 30 (former US Air Force) F-16s between 2001 and 2012, but has since abandoned the type. Still, the F-16 certainly remains a powerful and popular multirole fighter.

F-16 Services

The F-16 came just when its combat service could be deployed immediately. This guy has served at every level (and branch of service) in the U.S. military and was also selected to lead the air flight group "Thunderbirds." The F-16's first advanced combat deployment occurred during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, where their multi-role capabilities were put to good use in defeating Iraq's air defense network. After the war, the F-16 remained at the station to enforce the "no-fly zone" in northern and southern Iraq. The F-16 also participated in joint operations in the Balkans with the European Air Force during periods of instability and civil war in the region. Even though F-16s have been in service for decades, they will remain an essential part of the U.S. flight business for the foreseeable future, and they should be for the foreseeable future.

The F-16 also performed well in combat conditions with Israel. Israeli F-16s proved particularly useful against Syrian fighter jets in the 1982 Lebanon War, and have remained on standby in today's volatile Middle East.

The Israeli F-16I Block 52 model features a conformal fuel tank (CFT), advanced ECM and a two-seat cockpit layout.

The design of the F-16 was certainly not without flaws, and there have been several notable accidents and incidents on the production line over the decades, some of which have resulted in casualties, dating back to May 8, 1975 in Germany An accident in Fort Worth, Texas. The most recent incident was the death of a U.S.

Air Force plane and pilot over the Adriatic Sea off the coast of Italy on January 28, 2013.

As a single-engine design, high expectations were placed on the reliability of the F-16 system to ensure pilots returned home safely. A twin-engine aircraft can rely on the performance of a single unit in the event of a unit failure.

However, with a twin-engine design, both cost and complexity increase.

F-16XL Crank Falcon

The F-16XL exists as a technical offshoot of the basic F-16 fighter family. The main modification is the "crank arrow" delta wing design, which provides better lift, control, range and ammo racking. Its primary purpose was originally as a testbed for high-speed research, although it eventually (unsuccessfully) competed with the improved two-seat McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle to replace the outgoing General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark Interdictor Strike. fighter.

This resulted in the F-15E "Attack Eagle". In the decades leading up to 2009, only two F-16XL prototypes were completed, and both served NASA.

The planned Navy Falcon

The Vought "Type 1600" was an attempt by Vought/General Dynamics to promote a naval variant of the F-16 to the US Navy. The proposed product never matured as the F/A-18 Hornet was chosen for its place.

Interestingly, the F/A-18 originated from the YF-17, which competed (unsuccessfully) with the YF-16.

Falcon's Future

Despite its excellent service, the F-16's design is based on 1970s technology that operators have - or eventually - transitioned from the design to a more modern product. European players like Belgium maintain an alternative to the F-16 and may lean towards the Lockheed F-35 Lightning II fifth-generation aircraft. Other competitors include the Boeing Super Hornet, Dassault Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon and Saab Gripen.

Belgium's F-16s are expected to enter service in the early 2020s before fully replacing them in 2029.

The last of the Fighting Falcons, for rebuilding Iraqi air service (via the F-16IQ variant), will be delivered in 2017.

Pakistan is still likely to invest in eight F-16s. If the deal goes through, these are expected to be delivered in 2019.
