History

The Mansyu Ki-98 is a Japanese-developed mid-war attack aircraft originally designed in 1942 for the needs of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during World War II (1939-1945). The Ki-98 was used by the Manzhouli Aircraft Manufacturing Company (known as "Mansyu" or "Mansu") against the Kawasaki Ki-102 ("Randy") series, but neither program was available until the official introduction of the Ki-102 in 1944 How much results have been achieved. The war situation in Japan deteriorated, and the Ki-102 was used in limited production, mainly for home defense.

At the same time, the Ki-98 was redesigned as a high-altitude fighter (with turbochargers), but even this move failed - the Japanese Navy was only a shell of its predecessor, and the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (IJAAF) now It is Japan's last line of defense.

The Manchuria Aircraft Manufacturing Company was established in 1938 as a puppet state of Japan called "Manchukuo", forming Inner Mongolia. Manchukuo itself was established in 1932 after the Japanese takeover and existed until the end of the war in 1945. The company would take over the production of many Japanese military aircraft, from the 1935 Kawasaki Ki-10 "Perry" biplane to more advanced models as the war progressed. The location also provided Imperial Japan with a manufacturing hub far from the Japanese mainland and its major industrial bases, which were increasingly targeted by American bombers.

Mansyu completed nearly 2,200 aircraft during the wartime involvement until the factory finally fell under Soviet control in 1945, and its equipment was transferred to Soviet factories as war remuneration.

When completed, the Ki-98 has a crew of 1 and its dimensions include a length of 37.4 feet, a wingspan of 37 feet, and a height of 14 feet. Curb weight is 7,715 lbs and total weight is 9,920 lbs.

Power comes from a single Mitsubishi Ha-211 "Ru" 18-cylinder air-cooled radial-piston engine in a "propeller" configuration, with the engine mounted aft of the fuselage, producing 2,200 hp at takeoff (cruising power is great too) close to 1,750 horsepower). The engine is mounted directly to the rear of the cockpit and drives a four-blade constant-speed propeller unit via a 7-foot-long extended shaft.

Performance specs (estimated) are a top speed of 455 mph, a range of up to 775 miles, and a service ceiling of 32,800 feet.

The proposed weapons for this design are a 37mm Ho-204 gun and 2 x 20mm Ho-5 series guns. It is conceivable that this aircraft (as a dedicated attack platform) also has missile launch rails and conventional bomb-dropping racks.

The design culminated in a twin boom configuration, with the fuselage being a tubular nacelle tapering at both ends. Weapons were placed on the nose, the cockpit was located behind the cannon, and the engine was located aft of the fuselage nacelle. The wings are mounted aft amidships and have a straight design with truncated ends. The tail boom emanates from the trailing edge of the main wing aircraft and terminates in a circular vertical tail, connected by a common horizontal tail. The landing gear is fully retractable and wheeled in a tricycle arrangement.

With its clean and modern design, the Ki-98 was a promising addition to Japan's arsenal after the war.

The only prototype under construction when Japan surrendered was destroyed by its owner so that it would not fall into enemy hands - the Soviet Union made significant progress in Manchuria.
