The original Martin Baker MB. A civilian light aircraft has been killed in a fire that took away a prototype. trillion. 2 was developed as a fighter aircraft at the request of the Air Ministry and continued the weight reduction design process employed in the MB.
1, but this design did not offer new advancements over existing Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Navy (RN) fighter jets, so this design gradually declined in aviation history. Martin-Baker continued to develop its line of aircraft, eventually including the more practical MB.

The new requirements call for higher aircraft performance than Martin-Baker had previously attempted. The minimum top speed was 400 mph, and the engine of choice was the still-in-development Rolls-Royce "Griffin" inline (resulting in the temporary installation of the Rolls-Royce "Merlin"). The aircraft will demonstrate the key qualities specified in the MB.
1 and MB. 2 - Namely its lighter and simplified construction process, which facilitates maintenance, repair and general operation of the aircraft.
Martin-Baker engineers begin work on the new MB aircraft. 3. In 1938, the order for three-person aircraft was fulfilled.
When Britain entered World War I (1939-1945) with Germany in September 1939, the project was delayed as Martin Baker was forced to meet other more relevant RAF production requirements and produce various aircraft components for the war . Although three Rolls-Royce Merlin engines were offered, the first prototype featured a liquid-cooled 2,020-horsepower Napier "Sabre II" 24-cylinder H-type inline engine.
The resulting design certainly proved to be the most advanced Martin Baker aircraft to date. The frame is nicely streamlined, with an inline engine mounted in the nose, and the cockpit is midship, often giving a good view of the action ahead. The long nose and large main plane hindered some visibility outside the cockpit, but her configuration was traditional for the time. The raised fuselage spine provides more interior space, but in turn reduces visibility in the critical rear of the aircraft.
The fin is covered by a vertical fin and a mid-mounted horizontal plane. Chassis, fixed and camouflaged in MB. 2, now has a more modern look and is fully retractable (including the tail wheel). In contrast to the MB, the Napier engine drives a three-bladed propeller unit. 2 is the two-leaf form.
The aircraft's cockpit canopy and entry/exit are reminiscent of the classic Supermarine Spitfire.
Proposed fighter weapons are 6 x 20mm Hispano II series guns, three per wing element. In addition to the three airworthy prototypes ordered, a larger aircraft with 8 x .303 machine guns was ordered as an alternative weapon - four machine guns per wing.
The first prototype flew for the first time on 3 August 19432. By this time, the war was on, and combat mounts like the Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane were doing well. Few people in the Air Force really champion the virtues of MB. 3, but the program is still allowed to continue.
In early testing, MB. The 3 exhibited good flight characteristics, but its engines showed cooling issues that needed to be addressed. This inevitability led to further delays in the process as engineers rushed to fix the problems that came up. During a flight on September 12, 1942, Captain Valentine Baker (one of Martin Baker's founding members along with James Martin) was killed in his MB.
3's engine failed and its wings touched the ground during an evasive maneuver to avoid a building. The only airworthy prototype suffered a total loss.
As MB's tragedy develops. 3 is far from over as the partially completed second prototype becomes the upcoming MB. 5 developed (detailed elsewhere on this site) and the third never worked.
In addition, the cannon weapon was never installed or tested, and James Martin moved to a less dangerous aircraft program - primarily a process related to pilot safety, which eventually began Martin-Baker and the Cold War era (1947) jets Contact of the Ejection Seat - 1991) (the name is still in use today as approximately 20,000 ejection seats have been shipped to date).
Before Baker fully ejected, there was MB. 4 It is recommended that fighters intend to use MB. 3 body side by side with a supercharged Rolls-Royce Griffon Series 37.
