MacDonald F-101 Voodoo Story
Affectionately known as the "One-oh-Wonder," the McDonnell F-101 Voodoo was known for its many record-breaking early years in service. The twin-engine fighter-bomber design all but disappeared as more powerful long-range high-flying bombers were developed.
Luckily for this guy, the need for fighter escort was as evident as ever during the Korean War, and interest in voodoo came back to the fore. With the eventual involvement of Tactical Air Command, Voodoo found a home in the United States and became one of the most successful American aircraft designs of the Cold War, inevitably serving in the Vietnam War.
Development
Development of the F-101 Voodoo began with an expansion of the twin-engine XF-88 prototype that appeared in 1948. The XF-88 is designed to be used as a dedicated interceptor and heavy escort aircraft to protect the USAF's long-range bombers. As was common during World War II, bomber formations were protected by smaller, faster fighters such as the North American P-51 Mustang, Lockheed P-38 Lightning and Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, allowing bombers to concentrate on reaching target areas and laying down their ammunition without having to worry only about formation defenses. Conventional thinking carried over into the postwar world, only this time a demand for such performers was seen in sleek new jet-powered airframes.
MacDonald introduced the XF-88 and went beyond Lockheed and North American designs. However, at this time the USAF was reassessing the need for long-range escort fighter jets in the jet age and saw no need to pursue such a design. Therefore, the XF-88 project was cancelled.
With the start of the Korean War, the jet age was in full swing. However, it is clear that the USAF's long-range high-altitude bombers remain at the mercy of enemy fighter jets, and the loss of B-29s is unacceptable as the conflict unfolds. The U.S. Air Force made modifications to the XF-88 design, recognizing that a long-range jet-powered escort fighter was still needed.??? The XF-88 underwent a period of redesign that resulted in a longer fuselage, which provided interior space for more fuel (effectively affecting extended service life).
Changes throughout the XF-88 (including a new empennage layout, larger turbojets, and redesigned air intakes) now required a new family name, and the Voodoo family of aircraft was born - the XF-88 has now become a larger The redesigned YF-101 "Voodoo". Prototype from 1951. The YF-101 was also reconsidered as a true dedicated "strategic fighter" rather than the "penetration fighter" originally classified. This enables the YF-101 platform to mount a variety of weapons - including nuclear types - while retaining its original bomber escort role. The YF-101 (which eventually became the production version of the F-101A) took to the air on September 29, 1954, and entered service with the U.S.
Air Force as the F-101A in 1957.
In 1961, Canada received 56 remaining F-101B Voodoo for the Royal Canadian Air Force's CF-101B inventory. The CF-101B operated until 1985, when they were inevitably replaced by more powerful types. In addition, Taiwan has acquired several reconnaissance witchcraft ("RF" designations) for its Chinese Nationalist Air Force. Broadly speaking, USAF voodoos continued to perform their mandated duties until the early 1970s, when they were not retired until 1971. The U.S.
National Guard - another American voodoo operator - used the F-101 until 1983.
Conclusion
The F-101 Voodoo is truly a testament to advanced design, given the ever-changing warfare brought about by the jet age. As a "bridge design" between the fighters of the early 1950s and the fighters of the early 1970s, Voodoos excelled in both wartime and peacetime, setting several speed and endurance records in the process. There is no doubt that Voodoo's design had a direct influence on the later great McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, as these physical elements between the two types of aircraft can be clearly seen when compared side by side.
In every way, both aircraft have proven themselves in more ways than ever.
