The Messerschmitt Me 261 was a German project aircraft before and during World War II (1939-1945). It was initially conceived as a record-breaking propaganda platform to bring the Olympic torch from Germany to Japan.

However, the outbreak of World War II quickly derailed the Me 261 program as an aviation marvel, being relegated to an extensive testing phase and serving for a limited time with the Luftwaffe as a long-range reconnaissance platform. Only three examples were built - V1, V2 and V3 - and none survived the war.

Me 261 is informally called "Adolf" in honor of the Fuhrer (Adolf Hitler).

Me 261 stems from a design study conducted by Messerschmitt in 1937 called "Project P. 1064". It was based on the smaller twin-engine twin-unit BF 110, which entered production in time for the Luftwaffe during World War II. The new, redesigned high-speed performance machine manages to retain most of the BF 110's shape, including the basic design layout and split vertical tail.

However, the Me 261 has unique characteristics that make it a viable fast aircraft, including a strikingly streamlined shape, powerful engines and a flat design.

The Me 261 gained "wet wings", where the wing main aircraft was used to house the aircraft's fuel storage - freeing up the fuselage for more crew space and mission equipment. The main plane is also nearly as low as the fuselage itself, especially at the root of the wings, but manages to maintain a pleasing, sleek look when viewed from the side. Power for the aircraft comes from two engines mounted outside the fuselage, and to maximize performance, coupled liquid-cooled in-line piston engines from the Daimler-Benz DB601 series (producing 2,700 hp each) were selected. In the "paired" state, these power supplies become "DB606".

The same engine was used for the Heinkel He 119 project (only 8 aircraft would be built) and the He 177 strategic bomber (although 1,169 prototypes were produced during World War II, which proved problematic during development). In this way, the Me 261 is basically powered by a total of four engines, although it is only housed in two cabins.

The propeller unit in the game features a four-blade arrangement, and the counter-rotation of the blades helps to naturally counteract the torque effect (naturally pulling to one side) that only occurs when a single engine is running.

Unlike other aircraft of the era, engineers opted for a wheeled retractable tricycle landing gear, which consisted of the usual front struts and a pair of main elements (located below each cabin).

At the beginning of 1939, Messerschmitt started producing three prototypes. However, with the start of the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, the progress of the project was disrupted. This soon led to the cancellation of the 1940 Olympics, the Me 261's decline as a record-setting setter, and the war turned into a quarrel between Germany and its neighbors. Its fortunes changed a bit in the mid-1940s, and now people are considering completing the still-in-development Messerschmitt design as a long-range rapid reconnaissance platform.

Return to work with new goals by fall.

On December 23, 1940, the first prototype V1 was completed and flown for the first time by Messerschmitt. A second prototype flew in the air in early 1941, and this example continued until flight testing in 1943.

On April 16, 1943, the V3 was tested with two other crew members and was first switched to a paired DB605 engine (together, the "DB610" engine). The sample achieved 2,800 miles of range in 10 hours in one test, making it an unofficial endurance record at the time (never verified internationally due to the war).

Specifications for the V3 include an overall length of 54.8 feet, a wingspan of 88.1 feet and a height of 15.5 feet. Its flight crew consists of seven employees.

The Daimler-Benz DB610A/B 24-cylinder V-engine produces 2,900 horsepower and propels the airframe to a top speed of 385 mph with a range of 6,850 miles. The service cap was recorded at 27,100 feet.

Both the V1 and V2 prototypes ended up in the scrap heap, both damaged by Allied aerial bombs during the 1944 air raid on Lechfeld Air Force Base, where they were parked. The V3 crashed in July 1943 due to a hydraulic failure during port landing, but was repaired at Oranienburg.

The example was reportedly used for a short time by the desperate Luftwaffe for long-range reconnaissance missions - although it was thought to be scrapped before the end of the war, which came in 1945.
