During 1944, Messerschmitt (along with other German aircraft companies) worked hard to draft design concepts for the Luftwaffe Ministry (RLM) initiative of July 1944 to meet its "Emergency Fighter Program" (Jagernotprogramm)" Fighter - Emergency Plan"). After years of day and night bombardment by American and British bombers, the German command began to take defensive measures to keep its factories running and supply lines intact.

The Luftwaffe was an integral part of the German war machine, and a complete loss of air power would be a catastrophic event. Thus, the production of defensive fighters had to settle for powerful Allied bombers that could absorb a lot of damage and fly in formations of hundreds or even thousands of aircraft without pesky fighter escorts.

The advent of jet propulsion solidified the design direction of a new generation of German fighter jets. One of the most prominent post-war initiatives was the Heinkel Bureau's jet-powered, single-seat, single-engine Volksjager ("Volksjager"), which would be flown by undertrained civilians, such as in the final defense of Hitler's youth team in Germany.

A lesser-known development is Messerschmitt Me P. 1101.

Jagernotprogramm attempts to demonstrate the performance of a second-generation jet fighter design in the form of a single-seat, single-engine design. Of course, the RLM's winning design became the Focke-Wulf Ta 183 "Huckebein" ("Hump") - intended to replace the first generation Messerschmitt Me 262 "Schwalbe" ("Swallow") jet fighter - but the Messerschmitt P. 1101 Das The plan was allowed to continue development, albeit with reduced funding and resources. This particular Messerschmitt fuselage had swept wings, a single engine and variable swept wings - the latter of which was quite revolutionary at the time. Luckily for the Allies, only one prototype was built, but on April 29, 1945, it was found in the Oberammergau complex by the U.S.

Army that it was still incomplete, and it was found months and months after the war ended. It was brought back to the United States for evaluation within a few years.

Like the P. 1101 aircraft, the P. 1101/92 was another Messerschmitt-inspired fighter jet design attempt, but focused on two crew members and a pair of engines for optimum performance, And large - caliber guns suitable for "bomber hunting". As such, the P. 1101/92 would be classified as a "heavy fighter", or more properly as a "Zerstorer" ("Zerstorer"), in line with other such Luftwaffes such as the previous Messerschmitt Bf 110.

P. 1101, P 1101/92 never passed the "paper stage", never built, not even as a development prototype.

P. 1101/92 has a unique design. The body is cylindrical, albeit solid, topped by a contoured nose cone that tapers at the very end. The cockpit remains forward of the center of gravity and behind the nose cone assembly. The plane required two crew members to manage, and their seats were side-by-side, but the seats were staggered in nature, with the starboard crew sitting slightly behind the port crew.

Since the P. 1101/92 is a jet-powered instrument, it is believed that the aircraft will have a pressurized cockpit for the two crew members, as well as separate ejection seats for more timely evacuation of personnel from the crashed aircraft. As noted in the Messerschmitt drawings, these fields of view were sufficient for many frames, and the rear bulge of the fuselage did block the rear view of the two pilots. Wings are mid-mounted monoplane components with thick root roots, heavily swept along the trailing edge, and one trailing edge swept to a lesser extent.

The wing attachments extend forward to the midship, tapering and truncated at the ends. The dihedral angles on each span are easily noticed from the front profile. An in-span cylindrical turbojet will be mounted on the underside of each wing, with a nacelle extending from the leading edge to the trailing edge. The engines will be placed close to the wings to improve aerodynamic qualities.

A unique aspect of the P. 1101/92 design was the revolutionary use of a "V" fin without a horizontal fin surface. Instead, the plane will use two outwardly raked vertical tails that can act as both rudders and stabilizers. While this design element is common on aircraft today, at the time it would have been another design hurdle for the Messerschmitt team to overcome. The landing gear is in a tricycle arrangement with two single-wheel landing gear legs on each engine and a single-wheel nose landing gear leg held in front of and below the cockpit floor.

The construction of the P. 1101/92 will be all metal.

Another unique aspect of the design of the P. 1101/92 was the proposal to have a large caliber 75mm BK 7.5cm gun mounted under the nose and offset to starboard. The cannon was designed to engage American and British bombers head-on, providing the P. 1101/92 pilots with the firepower they needed to bring down Allied fighter jets in short bursts. While impressive in size, the combination of such a large weapon presents its own design hurdles in the airframe space required for the weapon system, its delivery mechanism and ammunition supply. Also worth noting is the recoil effect of using weapons in flight and the terrible stress this can put on a high-speed metal airframe. Such complex weapons systems are also prone to failure in the worst-case scenario, and exposure to the frigid temperatures of the upper atmosphere can exacerbate the problem.

Outside the range of the P. 1101/92, adding a low-caliber (probably 20mm) system at the root of the wing - some artistic impressions suggest this weapon could increase the lethality of the P. 1101/92. Of course, the use of high-explosive, unguided rockets and even wire-guided missile systems developed by the Germans at the time cannot be ruled out.

Power for the P. 1101/92 airframe will be provided by two Heinkel-Hirth He S 0 11 series turbojet engines, each capable of producing up to 2,860 pounds of thrust. Estimates of the performance specs of the Messerschmitt design abound, including a top speed of up to the 558. The powerplant will be another sticking point in the further development of the P.1101/92 jet engines, which have so far been relatively moody, extremely thirsty plants.

Placing such engines close to the fuselage and eliminating underwing installations entirely will also take time to achieve. The technical aspects of the P. 1101/92 plus the basic design aspects are indeed a mountain to climb.

Finally, all further development of P. 1101/92 was halted, as priority was now given to jet-powered equipment that could operate using only a single engine rather than the proposed pairing. In addition, until the war ended in May 1945, jet engine production facilities were constantly disrupted by Allied air raids and advancing Allied ground forces.

The Allied bombing raids ensured that the logistical infrastructure of the Luftwaffe and Army was completely destroyed, resulting in the inability of the jet engines to deliver the required number of jet engines to power designs such as the P 1101/92. This ends the tenure of this potentially stunning "bomber killer" design.
