History of Antonov An-188

The Antonov An-188 is a proposed turbofan-powered version of the company's An-70 medium tugboat (detailed elsewhere on this page). The An-70 is a post-Cold War Ukrainian development that first flew on December 16, 1994 and has continued to be developed ever since - only two prototypes have been completed so far (2017).

The design uses a high-wing arrangement with four "Profan" engines for propulsion.

The An-188 proposal replaces the propeller approach with 4 x Progress D436FM turbofans, each delivering up to 18,078 lbs of thrust (or similar Western offerings). This provides greater cargo capacity and improved performance.

The An-188 is said to be somewhere between the United States Air Force (USAF) Lockheed C-130 and Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport series. It will be a direct competitor to France's Airbus military A400M Atlas high-wing military transport aircraft, sources said.

As announced at the 2015 Paris Air Show, the An-188 proposal appears to have done very little. Therefore, many of the structure and performance numbers on this page are estimates by the authors.
