The story of Nakajima G8N Lianshan (Rita)

The Nakajima G8N Renzan (or "Mountain Range" - Allied codename "Rita") was a heavy bomber design developed by the Nakajima Aircraft Company in the late World War II. Production of the system was severely curtailed due to a lack of available war materials, especially aluminum, and the series continued as a whole in only 7 examples, including prototypes.

The heavily armed four-engine bomber program was weakened from the start, in part because the Allied advance kept the Reich on the defensive.

The production version of the Nakajima G8N appeared in early 1945 when the prototype first flew in 1944. The G8N is powered by a Nakajima-branded NK9K-L 24 Homare 18-cylinder radial engine. The wings are low-profile monoplanes mounted directly under the fuselage near the center.

The G8N has three-wheel landing gear and a tail fin. Classified as a heavy bomber, the G8N can carry a maximum internal bomb load of nearly 9,000 pounds. In addition to internal offensive weapons, the Nakajima G8N is also equipped with heavy defensive weapons in its design. Six 20mm Type 99 guns were mounted in twin gun turrets in front, rear and ventral turret positions.

Dual 13mm Type 2 machine guns were also mounted in the nose, with additional machine guns mounted at each hip gunner position.

The Nakajima G8N has good defensive capabilities, offensive capabilities, and great range, and it can have an impact if war events go in its favor. Nonetheless, the system will never reach its potential in the IJN.

An existing prototype sample was confiscated by the United States and sent back home for testing.
