Nakajima Ki-27 (Nate) History

The Nakajima Ki-27 "Nate" (formerly "Abdul") was an all-metal low-wing stress skinned fighter successfully used by Imperial Japan during World War II. Originally conceived as a private project by the Nakajima Corporation, the Ki-27 was quickly proposed and accepted by the Japanese Army.

The single-engine one-man fighter was Japan's first monoplane design, serving as a bridge between old and new fighter development strategies. Qualities that tie the Ki-27 to the way older fighter jets were designed, including the very recognizable static land landing gear.

The tail skid was still used when the Ki-27 reached full production. At the expense of self-sealing fuel tanks, pilot protection and other aircraft conveniences, the Ki-27 became a fast maneuvering fighter with 2 x 12.7mm heavy machine guns.

In the early years, the Ki-27 was successful against Chinese and allied fighter pilots in the Pacific. As Allied fighter jets continue to improve, aircraft like the Ki-27 will gradually become disconnected from advanced technology and relegated to homeland defense, pilot training or kamikaze use.

Ultimately, the decision to protect neither the pilot nor his fuel tanks became the premise of the plane's destruction. Lightweight and agile, the Ki-27 would no longer be a factor like its A6M Zero, and help the Allies advance in the Pacific.

Nonetheless, the Ki-27 was a success for a long time when it was initially delivered, and will remain a vital part of the Japanese military movement until the end of the war - albeit in a limited way until then.
