History of North American B-45 Tornadoes

Development of the XB-45 began in 1944 and continued until 1945, representing the end of World War II. With reports that Germany has successfully developed a production-grade jet bomber, the need for a U.S. response is crucial. As a result, the U.S. Department of War requested the use of jet bombers, and North American Airlines won the bid.

While the end of the global conflict slowed the XB-45's arrival, escalating Cold War tensions brought the design back into the spotlight.

Visually, the B-45 is a grid of smooth shapes and straight edges. The cylindrical fuselage has a greenhouse-like canopy with a similarly covered nose section. The wings are high-mounted monoplanes carrying four engines (two per wing) in a common nacelle. The wings are straight and mounted in the middle of the fuselage.

The fins are traditional T-shaped, with cantilevered horizontal surfaces and a single vertical fin surface. The stern gun position was placed at the bottom of the rudder.

The Tornado first flew as an XB-45 on February 24, 1947, of which three prototypes were built. At the end of development, one was lost in a fatal accident and the other was so badly damaged that it was no longer fit for combat and was relegated to training.

Nonetheless, the third and remaining model became the basis for production, delivered as the B-45A in 1947-48. As many as 22 of the original B-45s were equipped with Allison J35 engines, but since then, the GE J47A (water-injected) has been the engine of choice, offering increased reliability and performance.

The B-45A has some design changes compared to the XB-45, including a redesigned ejection seat and upgraded communications equipment. Accommodation and standard defensive armament for a four-person crew include 2 x 12.7 mm (0.50 caliber) M3 machine guns in the stern position.

A bomb navigation radar and an autopilot system were also installed. The B-45B appeared shortly after as a proposed improvement to the B-45A design, although the proposal never materialized.

The next notable addition to the Tornado family is the B-45C, which is essentially a long-range variant with wingtip fuel tanks and aerial refueling probes. The addition of the refueling probe makes the Tornado the world's first multi-engine bomber capable of aerial refueling.

A reinforced canopy was also on the list of improvements, although only 10 examples in total were produced before the arrival of the final RB-45 series Tornado.

The RB-45C is a photographic reconnaissance platform based on the B-45C model series to which approximately 383 and 38 newbuilds were retrofitted. The bombardier's compartment is paneled, and four camera stations can be fitted with special equipment.

In addition to providing external fuel tanks, Jet-to-Fly (JATO) missiles can also be used.

In total, approximately 143 Tornados were produced for the USAF. Despite engine problems, the series performed admirably in the early days of the Cold War, becoming many "firsts" for the USAF. The system was used in combat operations in the form of reconnaissance and bomber aircraft during the Korean War.

Only three Tornadoes are reportedly still on display, including a B-45A, B-45C and RB-45C at museums in Atwater, Calif., Dayton, Ohio, and Ashland, Nebraska, respectively. display.
