History of SAGEM Patrollers
The various wars of the early 2000s presented war planners with the need for more powerful unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which culminated in the significant growth of what was actually a veteran industry (unmanned systems used in warfare was used early, eg in Austria in 1849). As a result, there has been a surge of global players looking to make their mark in the field of unmanned aerial systems, drones and autonomous flight.
The French-born SAGEM Patroller was part of this drone explosion, which evolved from a two-seat Stemme ASP 515 motor glider. The Patroller eliminates the need for a human pilot while retaining all the form and function of a glider, providing a very useful, logistically friendly unmanned system for the civilian and military markets.
The system is approved for intelligence-surveillance-reconnaissance (ISR), artillery reconnaissance, peacekeeping/humanitarian assistance and border protection mission types. The mission payload is over 250 kg.
The Patroller is detailed at the tactical level as a UAV and has a scalable architecture that allows for better integration with existing air handling systems. The "See and Avoid" module can be used in civil airspace.
The aircraft is designed with inherently low noise characteristics, as well as reduced radar and thermal signatures, for better operation in theaters. Autonomous flight is possible, with both landing and take-off procedures handled automatically (as well as taxiing).
Therefore, the aircraft can use the conventionally prepared runway.
From the outside, the fuselage of this aircraft is teardrop-shaped, with a distinct bulbous front. It was fitted with powerplants, which included a three-bladed propeller unit located in the nose. Optics located under the belly provide a 360-degree view of what's happening below the aircraft. Supplied with tricycle chassis. The main planes of the wings are mounted straight and high on the sides of the fuselage, and each underwing point is capable of carrying a capsule.
The fins start at the rear of the fuselage and extend to a single fin attached to the horizontal stabilizer.
The Patroller is capable of flying for up to 20 hours, can operate at altitudes up to 20,000 feet, and reach speeds of 200 kilometers per hour.
