Swift Engineering History 020

Tailstock drones are a common sight in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) world due to their important inherent capabilities. They can take off and land vertically while traveling horizontally, combining the best attributes of a rotating platform with those of a fixed-wing product.

Swift Engineering, Incorporated developed such a system using its Model 020.

The main qualities of the Type 020 are its all-electric propulsion and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities. The former means a low-cost, low-emissions system, while the latter allows the drone to operate almost anywhere.

The aircraft has an interchangeable payload capacity of up to 1kg and can fly 75 miles at an altitude of 400 feet for two hours. The Type 020 takes off vertically with an easy and quick transition to horizontal flight, allowing it to operate in urban environments without the need for ready runway surfaces (and constraints).

Structurally, the 020 model has some unique but completely traditional straight-wing layouts. The hull is a smooth tubular shape that tapers at the ends. Twin-bladed propeller units are located at either end of the central mass, and there is an additional twin-bladed propeller unit on the leading edge of each wing to accommodate vertical takeoff and landing requirements. Behind each wing-mounted propeller section is a vertical tail for added lateral control. The aircraft is parked on a bipedal landing gear and features a gimbal high-definition (HD) camera and interchangeable-lens infrared (IR) camera assembly as primary optics.

Communication takes place via a satellite connection.

The aircraft is fully electric and can operate fully autonomously in all basic environments. The ground control system is a portable mobile unit that can be quickly assembled and disassembled on-site in just 10 minutes and the entire system can be broken down into eight smaller transport parts.

The Model 020 has two hard shells for maximum protection.

In addition to its obvious military applications, the Type 020 is marketed as suitable for the agriculture, package delivery, emergency services, humanitarian assistance, surveying, marine (Coast Guard, Search and Rescue) and research industries It's very versatile.
