Textron Night Watch Story

NightWarden is a new Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) from Textron Systems. The vehicle is based on the proven framework of the existing Shadow (Model B, Rev. 2) Tactical Unmanned Aerial System (TUAS) with increased performance and functionality (it shares up to 70% of parts with Shadow).

It was unveiled at the 2017 Paris Air Show, where it was announced that the product had completed prototype testing and was ready for mass production, with delivery within 12 months.

As a Category 3 UAV, the Night's Watch exhibits the same capabilities as Category 4 types, but expands its Category 3 classification by providing a "multi-mission" approach, capable of generally undertaking Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Role. The latter is achieved through underwing hardpoints suitable for carrying current-generation (presumably Hellfire) air-to-surface missiles (ASMs) and precision delivery systems.

The NightWarden has a lower noise profile than its competitors and can carry a dual payload of up to 130 pounds (or 60 pounds via the SATCOM variant).

Platform life reported as 15 hours, increased to over 18 hours with auxiliary fuel tanks installed. The wingspan reaches 22.8 feet. The operating range (configured with available SATCOM) is 1,100 km.

Take-off and landing procedures (as well as taxiing movements) can be carried out completely autonomously. The NightWarden's compact size allows it to fit comfortably on the belly of a Lockheed C-130 Hercules fixed-wing transport aircraft (or similar).

Externally, the NightWarden features a traditional UAV design layout with a straight fixed-wing main aircraft. The airframe contains associated operational and mission-specific systems, including chin-mounted optics, avionics, engines, fuel and payload. Aft is a conventionally powered engine driving a multi-blade propeller unit in a thruster configuration.

The unit sits between two thin struts that lead to the stern to form the empennage. These are covered by inwardly sloping vertical caudal fins. The landing gear is mobile and fixed during flight.
