History of Tupolev Tu-154 (careless)

The aviation history of the Russian Tupolev Group dates back to 1926 and has since gained prominence in the design of large military and commercial aircraft. To equip the latter with new mid-range tugs (replacing several upcoming turboprop models), Tupolev adopted a low monoplane wing design with three turbofan engines comparable to Western offerings of the time. With three engines located in the rear of the fuselage, a configuration popular in the 1960s and 1970s, design work on this model predated its first flight on October 4, 1968. After passing the tests and obtaining the necessary certifications, a new design emerged, the Tu-154, and production began in 1968 and continued until 2011. Deliveries of Tupolev to waiting airlines began in 1970, and the official introduction took place in 1972, at Aeroflot.

1,025 examples were eventually produced, and the breed has stocked approximately 21 airlines over its lifespan. About 100 of them are still flying today, which is impressive considering this guy was founded more than 40 years ago.

NATO observers named the plane "Careless" after it was recognized by the West.

Unlike Western airliner types, the Tu-154 was designed for very harsh conditions and for sailing in the vast and unforgiving airspace common to the Soviet border at the time. The landing gear was reinforced for operation in harsh airfields, while the body was developed to meet the harsh northern conditions.

With maintenance facilities in more rural areas of the country barely able to service the aircraft, the Tu-154 is designed to operate for long periods of time before regular overhauls are required. This stress undoubtedly contributed to several of the 39 published incidents involving the Tu-154 series during its useful life.

Other factors are often related to pilot/crew errors and accidents.

The design of the Tu-154 is traditional, with a slender tubular fuselage, forward-facing cockpit, low-mounted swept main wing assemblies, and a high-mounted T-tail on the vertical stabilizer. All three engines are concentrated at the rear of the design, with two spanning the vertical tail and the third buried in its front bottom (extending from the fuselage spine). The side of the fuselage is appropriately decorated with rectangular windows for passengers to watch. There are four rectangular access doors on both sides of the fuselage, which are convenient for passengers to quickly board and disembark.

Cargo is stored on the deck below the passenger seating area. The crew sits well in the design, with a good view of the nose through the framed windows. The nasal bone is a traditional two-wheel kit. Internal. The Tu-154 was designed to carry about 164 passengers. Externally, the Tu-154 is very similar to the American Boeing 727 series and the British Hawksidley Trident - both of which preceded the Tupolev design.

During its life cycle, the Tu-154 family of aircraft has seen quite a few variants. The initial production model, simply called "Tu-154", had 164 seats, and a total of 42 examples were built. An improved form appeared to be the Tu-154A, which added additional internal fuel storage, exit doors and multiple internal configurations to suit the carrier's requirements.

The engine is a modified Kuznetsov. The Tu-154B resulted in the use of new, stronger wings due to fractures that occurred in previous models in service at the time. Additional fuel storage, exit doors and passenger seats were also introduced. Tu-154B became the new Tu-154 standard, updating the previous brand where possible. This was followed by a slightly different Tu-154B form, the Tu-154B-1, with improved avionics, comfort and landing gear, and seating for 160 passengers.

64 of this sub-variant have been delivered. The Tu-154B-2 is similar, with increased seating to 180 passengers in the event of the loss of the galley. A total of 311 examples of this type were produced. The Tu-154S is a modified cargo tug model with improved internal structure. Nine were converted from existing Tu-154 and Tu-154B models.

The Tu-154M is a modernized variant that appeared in 1982 with the Soloviev D-30KU-154 family of turbofan engines. Both performance and range have been improved. Tu-154M-LK-1 is a VIP model modified for astronaut (astronaut) training.

The Tu-154M-ON was a one-time East German observation platform that was lost in an accident in 1997. The Tu-154M-100 was the last modern brand offered, debuting in 1998. The three prototypes differed by their Western-style avionics and 157 seats, and were temporarily delivered to Slovakia.

The early Tu-154 brand was powered by Kuznetsov NK-8 series turbofan engines, and later, more modern brands appeared with Soloviev D-30 series turbofan engines. Maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) and range have been improved for both designs, while top speed and service caps remain comparable.

With some government-level operations underway, the use of the Tu-154 inevitably went beyond the control of civil aircraft. The aircraft is also gaining a foothold in the lucrative military market, serving with the Air Forces of Armenia, Bulgaria, China, Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic, Cuba, East Germany/Germany (unified), North Korea, Poland, Mongolia, Russia/Soviet Union , Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

The most recent high-profile crash involving a Tu-154 occurred on October 4, 2010, when Plane 101, carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his cabinet, was on final approach The crash killed everyone on board. One of the deadliest crashes was CCCP-85311 on October 7, 1985, due to pilot error and an overloaded plane that stalled and crashed - killing 200 people.

The last reported incident occurred on January 1, 2011, when RA-85588 caught fire while taxiing, resulting in an explosion that killed three of the 124 people on board.
