The Story of Utva Vrabac
With drones becoming the norm of military operations for all major world powers, Serbia has followed suit, deploying Vrabac (sparrow) micro-unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for low-altitude reconnaissance and surveillance purposes. Introduced to the Serbian army in 2008, the vehicle was designed by the Belgrade Military-Technical Academy and manufactured under the umbrella of Utva Aviation Industries.
More than 50 such examples are believed to have been produced since 2008.
As a mini UVA, Vrabac has certain advantages, such as B. No expensive startup or recovery process is required. If necessary, the system simply activates manually and is restored by an internal parachute system, cushioned by airbags that deploy on the ground.
Capable of operating in full and low light, the Vrabac uses modern optics to function with a payload limited to 1.5kg. Also, this mini drone weighs 5.3kg, making it very portable. The structure is made of lightweight composite materials, while power is provided by a 350-horsepower engine that drives a twin-blade propeller assembly on the nose. The optics are located under the fuselage and can be viewed through the transparent casing. The wings are usually set high along the fuselage, swept slightly upwards after the wing root.
The tail is a thin, tapered rod that supports a vertical tail and a high-mounted horizontal tail. Due to the system's unique takeoff and landing procedure, there is no integrated landing gear.
In addition to military value, security forces can use Vrabac for all types of civilian reconnaissance and surveillance, including humanitarian operations.
