History

During World War II, a new air combat tactic known as "vertical siege" was developed, in which paratroopers retreat behind enemy lines near key positions and are carried with additional troops, jeeps, howitzers, ammunition, Glider pursuit of food and other war supplies. The idea is to outsmart the enemy by sudden action, while using well-equipped troops to hold territory until the main ground forces arrive.

The Germans, when they took over Europe, demanded such precise attacks on areas controlled by the enemy, that the Americans studied the results with great interest. The concept gained significant momentum for the U.S.

Army in 1941, and the initiative subsequently called for troop and cargo transportation.

The Army received designs from no fewer than 16 companies competing for potentially lucrative military contracts. The requirements specified two different glider shapes, the first being an 8- or 9-seat glider, and the second a larger 15-seat model. After reviewing all materials received, the Army ordered prototypes from eight submissions, including those from Waco Aircraft.

After evaluation, Army authorities selected the larger fifteen-seat Waco design as the "XCG-4".

Build a Glider

After trials in 1942, a mass production program was developed that eventually involved 16 different assembly lines from across the United States to manufacture the complete Waco "CG-4A". Waco alone produces 1,075 products.

Both entrants were surpassed by Ford Motor Company, which produced 4,190 gliders thanks to its proven mass production efforts. The entire Kingsford factory, once dedicated to making station wagons for families, has been converted to gliders, with 4,500 employees working around the clock, working eight-hour shifts, producing around eight gliders a day.

Due to the difficult transportation process, Ford simplified delivery of the finished glider by cutting a 120-foot-wide, one-mile-long path through nearby woods from its assembly line factory to Kingsford Airport. Assembled gliders are pulled by tractors directly from the factory to the airport and then shipped to Army bases across the country. Ford's production process results in the lowest acquisition cost of all Waco glider manufacturers$15,400 per plane, while most other manufacturers charge at least $25,000 and more per plane. Military inspectors inspected each CG-4A after final assembly, before the gliders were disassembled, boxed and transported by rail to the gliding school.

By the end of the war, the factories involved had produced a total of 13,906 operational gliders for the U.S. Army and its allies.

Specification

When completed, the CG-4A has a wingspan of 83.6 feet and an overall length of 48 feet. The frame of the aircraft is made of hollow steel tubes to reduce overall weight, then covered with a canvas skinning process.

The wings are made of plywood, and the floor is honeycomb plywood - a construction technique that provides strength with minimal weight. Bottom load capacity allows the CG-4A glider to carry 4,060 pounds for a final total weight of 7,500 pounds, 620 pounds more than the 9,000-pound empty weight of the glider itself.

It is designed to tow at a top speed of 150 mph, although in practice it is usually towed at a slower speed of 110-130 mph.

Glide maneuvers

The normal descent speed while gliding is 72 mph in perfect conditions, decelerating to a standard landing speed of about 60 mph. If the plane slowed to 49 mph in flight, it would stall and would not recover without power and would crash. The CG-4A was designed with a high-wing structure on a boxy fuselage, with the nose section hinged aft of the two-seat cockpit. Troops can tilt the nose up after disembarking to create a 5 x 6 foot opening, large enough to allow JEEP or other cargo to be unloaded from the main compartment.

This allows for quick loading and unloading of the glider.

As required by the original Army specification, the CG-4A could carry 15 fully equipped troops, including two pilots. Common cargo types loaded are: 1 x 1/4 ton JEEP designed to carry a variety of equipment and weapons and three personnel, 1 x 75mm howitzer with 25 projectiles and its two gunners, or 1 x bulldozer and its single operator.

Some "reverse logistics" flights require return from theater to base for casualty evacuation, which allows the CG-4A to also accommodate six casualty stretchers.

Powered aircraft are flown directly overseas or transported on the deck of an aircraft carrier, ready to fly upon arrival in the intended theater of operations. Gliders, on the other hand, must be shipped unassembled in crates, for which a CG-4A glider requires five large crates for final construction.

Upon arrival at the destination, the crates were unloaded from the cargo hold of the cargo ship within a few days, and the components were dismantled. The need for precise assembly forced many gliders to undergo special training and delayed deliveries at critical moments of the war -- which in turn delayed major operations.

Reassembly times vary depending on the familiarity of the builder - hastily built gliders are notorious for breaking in flight due to sloppy construction and fastening.

The glider is usually towed behind a twin-engine transport aircraft like the Douglas C-47 "Skytrain" by nylon cables about 350 feet long. The other transports in the game are the twin-engine Curtiss C-46 "Commando" and the four-engine Douglas C-54 "Tianba". Sitting side by side in the spacious cockpit, the pilot and co-pilot were trained first as glider pilots and then as combat crews.

Some people already have experience with powered flight training, but they are all a special breed who volunteer to fly unarmed and unpowered aircraft without parachutes, teaching them to land on unfamiliar terrain, often behind enemy lines and under direct fire landing. Each glider has a simple dashboard with little comfort for the crew and passengers.

The crew managed the tow disconnect that separated the glider from the towed aircraft. The instrument panel contains basic items such as an airspeed indicator, altimeter, rate-of-climb indicator, pitch and turn indicators, and a compassfew of which can be controlled by the glider pilot and aircraft.

U.S. Army General William C. Westmoreland said of the glider crew:

"Each landing is a true all-or-nothing situation... Their enormous responsibility is to repeatedly risk their lives to land in uncharted territory deep within enemy territory, often in complete In the dark. They were the only pilots during World War II who had no engines and no second chances."

Before the Normandy landings in northern France in June 1944, gliders were carried by cargo ships to British staging areas, or towed behind bombers. In the summer of 1943, the first CG-4A embarked on its journey, towed by an American bomber while also loaded with critical war supplies: vaccines, radios, aircraft and engine parts.

Soon the first 25 gliders entered service in the UK, they were designated "Hadrian Mk I" and the modified model of the equipment became "Hadrian Mk II". Hadrian's name comes from the Roman emperor, and when gliders line up tip-to-wing on British tarmacs, they resemble "Hadrian's Wall" - the classic 80-mile defensive wall built across the UK to bring "civilization" together. The danger of gliding

Lessons from Sicily

The first operation using the CG-4A occurred during the Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943 - "Operation Husky" - during Operation Radbrook, 144 gliders carrying British troops were captured Towed to the landing area near Syracuse. July 9. More than 60 gliders were released prematurely on orders from US and UK trailers, causing the gliders to crash into the sea, killing 252 by drowning.

Chindit Strike Force

The next major glide operation took place on 5 March 1944 - the second Wingate-Chindit operation in Burma, known as "Operation Thursday". The operation involved gliders descending under cover of darkness in a jungle clearing (known to the Burmese army as "Chindit") about 150 miles behind the main Japanese line.

LZ, codenamed "Broadway," became the first target of the night, with the glider landing at Chowringhee the next day. The first wave consisted of 52 Waco gliders towed by 26 Dakotans from the First Air Commando, and the second wave was numbered 28 gliders.

Another 600 gliders arrive next week, bringing a total of 9,000 Chindi fighters and more than 1,000 mules.

The Almighty Mule

The faceted mule proved to be a godsend in the harsh jungle terrain, where vehicles were largely prohibited by the dense brush. Military mules can carry up to 20% of their body weight - the equivalent of 200 pounds of heavy weapons, ammunition, radios, chemical rations, medical supplies, and more. Mules can also provide troops with an emergency food source should their loads run out or food deliveries fall behind schedule. Because mules became so important in warfare, when the original mule was lost in battle, it needed to be replaced.

This requires more mules to be flown in by gliders. The CG-4A can transport three animal mules and their handlers in a makeshift bamboo shed, with the mules attached to the side of the glider for safety. Sometimes the mules were parachuted into areas where the gliders couldn'ta behavior that was usually not good for the poor animal, as some animals couldn't handle the jerkiness of opening the parachute, causing the neck to break. Additional injuries can also occur while landing, and broken legs are a frequent occurrence.

To reduce losses in the event of a mule fall, an inflatable dinghy was used to wrap the mule and attached to six parachutes. All these efforts were necessary because each British column had 306 soldiers and 57 mules and their leaders. These hardy animals are known for their strength, endurance and steadiness.

Despite their tenacity, the mules occasionally got lost in the jungle, shot by the Japanese, or fell to their deaths along steep mountain roads.

Conference setbacks

By February 1944, the American factory was doing its part by producing and building 2,100 Waco CG-4A gliders for England. The new question became the number of untrained British civilians tasked with assembling the aircraft and moving quickly to assemble the Wacos, who completed the project just five weeks before D-Day.

Normandy Glider

The most important vertical encirclement operation of the Allied glider forces was the Normandy invasion of France on June 6, 1944.
