History of WB Electronics FlyEye
The FlyEye Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is described as a low-cost miniature drone designed for use in a variety of unarmed roles on the battlefield. The aircraft is a product of the Polish company WB Electronics and was designed, developed and produced entirely on site.
The FlyEye is able to monitor critical areas, scout enemy positions, and aid the accuracy of long-range shelling by "calling" riflemen to their targets. The system is designed to be started and restored manually and does not require additional, expensive support equipment to operate.
The drone is detachable into two main parts for travel, enhancing portability and making it useful at squad level.
The FlyEye is equipped with dual daytime and thermal imaging cameras, mounted on the belly. On the nose is a multi-blade propeller unit powered by an onboard engine. The main wing is located above the fuselage of the aircraft, while the tail is a simple tubular assembly terminated at its rear end by a vertical tail.
There is a horizontal plane on the caudal fin.
FlyEye was recovered by the operations team. It protects its critical payload by ejecting these components before landing. Landing is via operator-initiated glide mode (usually two crew members). Glide mode is also useful during routine operation as it reduces the noise signature of small drones.
The setup time for the FlyEye is just ten minutes.
The flight distance under the control of the radio link reaches 50 kilometers, beyond this range, the autonomous flight reaches 200 kilometers. Its service is capped at 4,000 meters, and the plane can stay in the air for three hours. The stated take-off weight is 12 kg.
Dimensions include a length of 1.5 meters and a wingspan of 3.6 meters.
The Polish Army is the main operator of FlyEye. In May 2014, a FlyEye went unresponsive during an artillery exercise. It was found three days later.
