History of Yakovlev Yak-41 (Freestyle / Yak-141)
Vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) flight for fixed-wing fighter jets puzzled aeronautical engineers for decades, until several of the many initiatives of the 1960s finally took shape into a viable form. The most famous of these is the British Harrier, produced under two different brands - the land-based assault version and the naval version of the Sea Harrier, the latter of which served during the 1982 Falklands War. For the Soviet Union, the concept was only really realized in the Yakovlev Yak-38 "Forger" which was in service with the Soviet Navy from 1976 to 1991.
231 aircraft of this type were produced, but these were limited in carrying capacity and overall performance - thus not entirely successful. Other programs, such as the 1963 Yak-36 "Freehand" (a program to produce four prototypes), helped advance the Soviet goal of VTOL combat flight.
In 1975, Yakovlev OKB was directly commissioned to expand the capabilities of its Yak-36 design through a formal government contract. The product was designed to be a fleet defense fighter for the Soviet Navy, with inherent supersonic capabilities to keep pace with Western fighter jets.
This means the aircraft must exhibit fighter-like qualities such as agility, robust weapons integration, and performance in the long-range interception role required against incoming air threats. The new vertical take-off and landing fighter program was born under the name "Product 48" and was called "Yak-41" by the Soviet Navy.
Design studies begin to phase out incompatible engine layouts and configurations. The main challenge was to deliver supersonic performance while maintaining vectoring thrust capability, which led engineers to choose a single engine layout for safety and simplicity.
Thrust vectoring will come from nozzles located in the middle of the fuselage (aided by smaller "propellers" mounted on the front of the fuselage) and general forward thrust/lift through jet tubes at the rear of the aircraft. The rear jet tubes are designed to be rotated 90 degrees downward to further assist VTOL operations at the rear of the aircraft - an arrangement now seen in the US 5th generation Lockheed F-35 Lightning II strike fighter.
With this single-engine layout in mind, the engineers designed the fuselage to include two tail booms flanking the engine mounts. The rest of the plane mimics the design lines of early Soviet high-speed aircraft of the era - namely the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 "Foxbat" and MiG-31 "Foxhound", which had a plate-like front fuselage with air intakes The ends of the large, rectangular ports (on either side of the cockpit) and the small-surface wings are truncated and show sweeping along their leading edge. The main-wing aircraft is designed with a folding function, which is convenient for aircraft carrier storage, and the reinforced wheeled tricycle landing gear can be retracted. Titanium has been used to protect surfaces expected to withstand the extreme temperatures of list units, while general areas have been finished using composite materials where possible.
The Yak-41 design eventually adopted a three-engine layout. Its primary propulsion/lift unit is a Soyuz R-79V-300 turbofan engine with 24,300 lbf dry thrust and 34,170 lbf with the afterburners on. The lift engines consist of 2 RKBM RD-41 turbojets, each delivering 9,300 lbf of thrust.
As a fighter, the production-grade Yak-41 (Yak-41M) will carry the standard GSh-301 series 30mm internal cannon for close range work, fed from a 120-round cartridge. Contains five hardpoints (four lower wings, one fuselage centerline) for carrying a variety of Soviet air-to-air missiles - external bearings up to 5,735 lbs for short-, medium- and long-range targets in various combinations.
Yakovlev OKB was allowed to build a total of four prototypes during development, which resulted in the four aircraft being named in sequence: 48-0, 48-1, 48-2 and 48-3. The 48-0 was retained as a static test bed, the 48-1 tested the engine, and the 48-2 completed its first flight in the series on March 9, 1987, when the aircraft completed routine takeoffs and landings.
On December 29, 1989, the first hover attempt was successfully completed with the 48-3 prototype, followed by the first compound maneuver (vertical takeoff and forward flight) recorded on June 13, 1990. The first vertical carrier landing took place on September 26, 1991.
In practice, the Yak-41 showed strong qualities, with pilots reporting that it was a responsive aircraft with excellent combat performance. In fact, these prototypes received multiple flight records, although due to the top-secret development of the design, the name "Yak-141" was instead entered in the record books. When the name became widely known in the West, NATO codenamed it "Freestyle".
In October 1991, one of the prototypes was severely damaged by a fire caused by a hard landing on the deck of the aircraft carrier. While the fuselage was recovered, its days of flight were over as it served as a showcase for the remainder of its tenure.
The Yak-41 was an impressive aircraft when it was built. Performance specifications include a top speed of over Mach 1.4 (approximately 1,120 miles per hour), a ferry range of up to 1,865 miles, a service range of up to 1,300 miles, a service ceiling of 50,855 feet and a climb speed of 49,215 feet per minute.
Also in October 1991, the Soviet Navy announced that it would discontinue the Yak-41 program (this occurred during the turbulent period of the fall of the Soviet Empire, when the Soviet Army suffered heavy losses due to budget cuts). Therefore, the Yak-41M expected as a production model was not proposed.
The brand will integrate an upgraded avionics suite on the wing as well as leading edge root extensions (LERX). Another engine brand - the Yak-43 - also fell into the void. This will carry Kuznetsov/Samara NK-321 series engines (from Tupolev Tu-160 bombers) and RD-41 lift engines.
The Yak-41U is designed to be a two-seater trainer, showing incoming Russian navy pilots the intricacies of VTOL flying.
US defense industry giant Lockheed was briefly involved in the Yak-41 program in the early 1990s as the company worked to sell its VTOL-oriented fighter product, the X-35 (later to become the F-35 Lightning II, to the US Air Force) ). Aside from the final demonstration of the 48-2 and 48-3 prototypes in 1993, the Yak-41 production went down in history after only two aircraft production lines (excluding the two static/test members) - it was never commissioned Served in the Russian Navy.
