History of the Bell H-13 Sioux
"Helicopter" was developed during World War II (1939-1945), some of which were actually used by the Germans later in the conflict. In the United States, Bell Helicopter adopted Arthur M. Young's design, resulting in the Model 30 prototype.
This prototype then became the basis for the famous Type 47, of which 5,600 were produced from 1946 to 1974 and used by various global civil and military operators. The U.S. Army adopted the Model 47 as the H-13 "Sioux", a small helicopter that was in extensive service during the Korean War (1950-1953) and some in the early days of the Vietnam War (1950-1975). Also. About 2,400 examples of this form were constructed and stored in the inventories of many global militaries.
The first flight of the prototype was recorded on December 8, 1945. The platform served the U.S. Army, Air Force and Navy during its long-term service, while UK-based Westland built the model under license, called the Sioux AH. 1/HT. 2.
The H-13 marked the U.S. military's first large-scale helicopter purchase and the first helicopter-type aircraft to arrive in a Korean theater. It was also the first U.S.
Army helicopter to carry the Native American tribal name ("Sioux"), which is still common today, as evidenced by the Boeing AH-64 "Apache" and Bell OH-58 "Kiowa".
While the aircraft is primarily known for its medical evacuation services through the M.A.S.H. ("Mobile Army Surgical Hospital"), the type has proven to be useful in reconnaissance, cable laying, mission liaison, general duties, and pilot training Equally valuable. Controls are relatively simple, the dashboard is compact, and the transparent canopy provides the two crew members with a good view from the cockpit.
As an instructor, it was the pilot's springboard into the H-19 "Chickasaw" pilot program. It also served as a training platform for convoys prior to their arrival in South Korea, and as a training platform for Apollo astronauts to learn the rate of rotation decline.
Of course, transporting the wounded played a vital role in Army/Air Force operations across the peninsula, and a single H-13 could carry a pair of stretchers across North Korea's harsh terrain, moving faster than anyone to the Assistance to the wounded. Otherwise, the ATV can traverse kilometers of rough, rocky terrain.
Over time, patient areas such as warmth and protective elements have been modified to provide some comfort at thousands of feet. Blood exchange can even be done by connecting to the plasma bottle holder inside the crew compartment.
The H-13 provided such an invaluable service in the war that it became known as the "Horn of Mercy." In fact, an H-13 pilot has promoted about 922 personnel through 545 sorties during his 14-month tenure.
In 1952, the H-13 participated in two major resupply operations. The first lasted seven days and involved just one H-13, hauling roughly 20,000 pounds up a mountain awaiting combat engineers.
During the second, longer, 10-day operation, several H-13s delivered 17,000 pounds of supplies and reinforcements to Allied infantry units located 800 yards behind enemy lines, also on a mountain.
While normally unarmed, some Army H-13S models are equipped with skid-mounted air-to-surface missiles and can additionally carry a pair of .30 caliber machine guns. Anti-tank missiles were photographed on at least one H-13, the missiles were externally attached to large-span structural attachments.
H-13 operations can also benefit from the accompanying Bell UH-1 "attack helicopters," which are better equipped to provide cover fire and support in enemy-controlled areas.
The H-13 survived the Cold War years and lengthened during the Vietnam War. There were 861 H-13s in service at the start of the conflict. In December 1961, the 8th and 57th Transport Companies arrived in Saigon, consisting of OH-13E and CH-21 models.
The operation continued until 1962, mostly in observation roles. The H-13 was eventually replaced in the U.S. Army inventory by the more modern 1969 Bell OH-58 "Kiowa" series.
Although no longer in widespread use, some H-13s and related models still play an active role in the world's militaries and civilian factions.
