History of AIDC T-5 Yung Yin (Brave Eagle)

Taiwan's AIDC is currently developing the Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) as the successor to its aging AT-3 jet, which is also built by the company. The AJT is based on the existing AIDC F-CK-1 "Ching-kuo" fighter frame, currently (2017) in service with the Republic of China (Taiwan) Air Force, but 80% will be its own design - if you just General take F -Form of CK-1 and some other qualities.

The program hopes to bear fruit by 2021, when the bulk of the AT-3 fleet is expected to be either fully retired or close to retirement.

The AJT will be powered by 2 Honeywell /TEF124 series low bypass non-afterburner turbofan engines. These originate from the TFE731 engines for the civilian market, while the afterburner version of the same system is the F125 - which powers the aforementioned F-CK-1 fighter in a side-by-side configuration.

The F124 engine required a larger airframe to accommodate the pairing seen on the F-CK-1.

As a trainer, the AJT has no radar in the nose section, but retains the general shape of the F-CK-1 fighter nose. Two crew members will sit in tandem under a long-running, unobstructed canopy projected amidships. The tail between the two exhaust ports (like on the F-CK-1) will have a vertical tail. The general appearance of the main wing aircraft and the F-CK-1 tail will be largely retained, although the former will have thicker chords. The larger internal volume allows more internal fuel to be carried, thus allowing the aircraft to stay in the air for longer.

Up to 10 percent of the aircraft structure will be lightweight composite materials, and the avionics will be supplied by BAe Systems with locally developed software to activate.

Development work on the AJT began in April 2017 and is expected to last four years, including testing, flight testing and formal evaluation. The first flight is tentatively scheduled for 2020, with deliveries expected to begin shortly thereafter.

ROCAF is expected to receive approximately 66 new trainers to replace their current inventory of 49 AT-3s (2017).
