History
While Britain's Handley Page and Germany's Gotha bombers were notorious in World War I texts, both Italy and Russia have advanced in producing viable long-range heavy day bombers for the modern military The purpose of the front of the curve. Both countries had developed operational heavy bombing platforms through the war and California's opening salvo. 1 is at least evidence of this fact. The office "Societa de Aviazone Ing Caproni" (better known as "Caproni") proved to be a pioneer in the field, leading to their first attempt at the impressive "Caproni 260hp" sometime in 1913.
This version has a "slider" engine and a pair of "slider" engines - these Gnome rotary engines are housed in a central fuselage nacelle. Two thrust systems drive the propellers mounted on the tail boom through the tractor assembly. The revised version was then tested in October 1914. In the postwar years, these respective systems were referred to as Ca.
30 and about 31.
Heavy Bomber
No matter the era, heavy bombers are a great addition to any military arsenal. They provide world powers with long-range attack capabilities and larger payloads than scouts or fighter jets, use multiple engine configurations, and require the use of multiple aircrews. Therefore, countermeasures in the form of trainable machine guns are deployed to cover critical quadrants around the aircraft.
Ultimately, these day-only bombers became the colossal monsters that complemented the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Today, heavy bombers exist more or less in new stealth equipment and multirole combat systems.
Make better products
After a period of evaluation, it was determined that these new large bomber platforms were severely underpowered. To get better performance from their "giants," Caproni moved the tractor motors to the tip of each tail boom, keeping the thruster system in the previous centralized nacelle approach. This allows any wing-mounted motor to directly drive its propeller more efficiently.
Subsequently, the French Gnome rotary engine was replaced by the Italian FIAT A.10 series type, giving rise to the new company name "Caproni 300hp". The first flight took place in late 1914. FIAT eventually delivered over 15,000 engines of all types during World War I.
First shipment
This modified development caught the attention and imagination of the Italian Army and conceived the first Italian bomber force. The new bomber was officially named Ca. 1 Produced by the Italian Army, production began mid-August 1915.
By December 1916, approximately 162 to 166 aircraft were eventually delivered.
Pre-emptive
About 1 second after delivery, it was quickly accepted into service by the Italian army. Their first real sortie took place on August 20, 1915, against Austrian targets at an airfield in Aisovizza. Most of the Ca. 1s were used in such attacks, mainly against Austria-Hungary, and this new bomber ended up serving a total of about 15 Italian Air Force squadrons during the war.
Three of these Italian squadrons are known to operate outside France, while another squadron is stationed outside Libya for overseas deployments.
Approx. 1 bomber circuit
The Ca.1 features a large-span, four-plate biplane wing configuration. At the center of the wing is the crew nacelle, containing quarters for the four crew members and a third engine. The main engine is mounted in front of the outstretched arms in a "puller" function arrangement.
The third engine on the central nacelle operates as a "propeller". The crew consisted of two pilots, a front gunner and a rear gunner, all deployed in tandem positions. The former gunner sat in the frontmost compartment.
Apparently, the rear gunner stood in an open cage canopy aft of the upper wing assembly and forward of the rear thrust engines. The arms extend back to form a horizontal stabilizer. Three vertical tails are attached to this tail. The landing gear is a fixed structure consisting of a tricycle unit with two single-wheel main landing gear legs and a single-wheel nose landing gear, both supported by struts. The tail of the fin is supported by a simplified tail skid mounted at the end.
The building is mainly made of wood covered with fabric.
Performance, size and weapons
3 Fiat A. 10 6-cylinder in-line engines with liquid cooling, each delivering up to 100 hp. That gives the large plane a speed of up to 75 miles per hour and a range of 344 miles. Her service cap is listed as about 13,000 feet. Her curb weight is about 7,200 pounds, for a total weight of 8,800 pounds. The wingspan is nearly 23 feet and the overall barrel length is over 36 feet.
She stands an impressive 12 feet tall. The bombs were hung under the central nacelle and there were 2 x 6.5mm FIAT Revelli machine guns for defense. These machine guns were mounted on the front gunner's hull and on the rear gunner's base cage.
About 1 after the war
In the postwar years, Ca. 1 was renamed "Ca. 32". about 1/approx. The 32 that survived were logically refurbished as airliners. These systems can carry up to six passengers with relative ease and have been named "Ca. 56" by Caproni.
Improved ca. 2 and final ca. 3
The Caproni Ca. 2 ("Caproni 350 hp") is a slight variation (upgraded engine) of the advantages of the Ca. 1 platform. Development culminated in the final Ca. 3 bomber platform.
