Hawker Siddeley HS. 1201 History
Before selecting the Eurofighter Typhoon for the Royal Air Force (RAF), British Hawker Siddeley conducted several design studies. This includes ex-HS. The 1200 series from 1976 (described in detail elsewhere on this site), followed inevitably by the "HS. 1201". And the single-seat single-engine HS.
The appearance of the 1200 is no different from General Dynamics' F-16 "Fighting Falcon" (except for the use of two vertical stabilizers) HS. The 1201 is a completely different approach, with the engines (installed in the nacelle) located in the rear of the fuselage. hs.
Described as a light fighter, the 1201 promises easy maintenance, inexpensive operation and exceptional speed.
In both cases, no designs for further development were selected.
HS. The 1201 has a slender fuselage shape with a single-seat cockpit in its usual position near the nose. The radar will be installed in a pointed cone. The pilot reclines on the ejection seat (as in the F-16 to increase the operator's G tolerance), and the light-frame canopy provides excellent visibility from the cockpit. The expected placement of the Rolls-Royce engine above the fuselage kept the actual fuselage as small as possible and greatly contributed to the fighter's light weight.
This also facilitates service and repair accessibility and general replacement of the entire unit, minimizing long-term operating costs.
The main aircraft element of the wing (variable pitch design) is located amidships, the rear line is slightly retracted and the leading edge is significantly retracted. Each member has a fixed point and the wingtips are reserved for air-to-air missiles (AAM). The tail mounts the single engine on a short support structure, and the powerplant is flanked by vertical fins sloping outwards, which somewhat shield the engine's heat output while also acting as a horizontal plane (this fin arrangement Known as a "V-tail" or "butterfly").
Ground walking will be achieved by a traditional retractable/wheeled tricycle arrangement with the main legs under each main aircraft and the front legs under and aft of the cockpit area.
Due to the sleek nature of the overall design, the internal 27mm autocannons are buried in the wing main aircraft to better accommodate the angle of attack in melee (and work closely with the variable incidence main aircraft design). With the use of rockets, dogfights inevitably morph into battles to deliver a favorable "killing blow." Thus, the gun pods form outcrops on the leading and trailing edges of each wing and ultimately share the internal volume with the main landing gear assembly.
In addition to the artillery armament, it will carry 4 x AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, giving the fighter a solid foothold against enemy attackers - whether like-minded fighter types or bombers emerging from Soviet bases.
Design in HS. The 1201 series studies will continue to use "HS. 1201-6" (RB. 199 engine, full span flaps), "HS. 1201-7" (RB. 409-50R engine, 9,710 lb dry thrust, afterburner 17,310 lbs), "HS.1201-8" (RB.246-06 engine) and "HS.1201-9" (RB .409-50R engine, leading edge molding, fixed wing).
As shown, the aircraft has a barrel length of 49.9 feet and a wingspan of 33.6 feet. Weighing 23,000 pounds when fully loaded with fuel and rocket, estimated performance includes a top speed of Mach 1.4 (at an altitude of approximately 6,000 feet).

Weapons
Recommended, fixed: 2 x 27mm internal autocannons placed in pods on each wing's main aircraft element (fixed, forward firing). Recommended optional: 4 x AIM-9 Sidewinder Short-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (SRAAM) on the wings, one on each wingtip and one under each wing.
