History of the AVIC WZ-8

The military value of "hyposonic engineering" has increased significantly over the past decade, with the United States, Russia and China developing at an alarming rate. A hypersonic aircraft must meet aerodynamic forces that exceed conventional atmospheric samples, especially acceleration, reentry from orbit, and cruising at supersonic speeds. Thanks to the near-space capabilities of these vehicles, they can reach anywhere in the world in record timecertainly for reconnaissance-focused and potentially counter-attack drones.

At the 2019 Beijing military parade, AVIC's "Wuzhi 8" supersonic/near-supersonic UAV was unveiled to the public. Its presence was cemented when the plane resurfaced alongside other Chinese-origin unmanned aerial systems (UAS) at the Zhuhai Airshow in September 2021.

The 2019 display featured an example of an aircraft displayed on a flatbed truck, while the 2021 display was an accessible static display.

The WZ-8 bears similarities (in form and function) to the US Cold War-era Lockheed D-21 UAV, which was often used for spy flights over Chinese airspace (examples claimed by China to be shot down - There is no doubt that the technology is explored to the extreme). The WZ-8 is air-launched (a pair of lugs on the spine confirms this), which requires a "mothership" like the active Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) Xi'an H-6N bomber to launch it in-flight Carry a suitable take-off altitude under the wings (the WZ-8 has no air intakes and therefore no air-breathing engines and can take off on its own power).

Once at a high altitude, the UAS turns on its rocket motors and flies towards its target at speeds close to or above Mach 5 capable of overtaking surface-to-air missiles (SAMs).

The WZ-8 uses two booster units embedded in the fuselage side by side. The fuselage itself features a blended wing-body design, resulting in a streamlined, aerodynamically refined, arrow-like shape the nose is tapered and slender, and the fuselage is shaped like a tube.

Each main plane utilizes a large surface area and is covered by vertical, outwardly sloping ribs, a departure from traditional horizontal stabilizer assemblies. The wheeled tricycle landing gear was envisioned for ground operations, with the interpretation that the WZ-8 was a reusable vehicle that could be retrieved via a prepared airstrip.
