History of the Bell 533 (High Performance Helicopter)

The classic Bell Huey helicopter became the workhorse of the West during the Cold War (1947-1991), and today many offshoots of this successful design ( 2017) is still in operation. When the Huey product was in its infancy, the company partnered with the U.S.

Army to test the limits of high-speed rotorcraft with combined engine configurations. Early Huey models were fitted with wing main aircraft and fuselage mounted jet engines to provide additional propulsion, becoming the Bell 533 - also known as the "High Performance Helicopter".

Bell Helicopter fulfilled the U.S. Army's requirements for the program, and the two teamed up to make the Type 533 a reality in August 1961. The YH-40-BF development helicopter, one of six pre-production Huey helicopters to be built, was selected as the primary example for the project.

In addition to simplifying the helicopter's fuselage to improve aerodynamic efficiency (including replacing the rotor blades), there will be significant additions to its basic design, including the installation of a wing main aircraft (final sweep) and a turbojet engine, the latter of which provides additional The forward thrust helps the overall increase in speed. Internally, several changes have also been made to the design and assembly of the helicopter to further enhance the already generic design for the rigors of high-speed flight.
