It is no secret that Iran is trying to present itself as a major global military power under the constraints of long-standing sanctions. Its domestic military capabilities have grown steadily over the past few decades, spawning a variety of new tools of war, including small arms, armored vehicles, air defense systems, and, more recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The number of foreign acquisitions and domestically produced drones in Iran has increased significantly over the past decade, with each newly promoted system in turn promoting all new capabilities to its regional enemies and the world at large.
The Kian, said to be entirely indigenously designed and developed, was unveiled by the military and state media on September 1, offering the nation a new single-use reconnaissance-strike drone with a range beyond the limit. The plane is one of the latest drones said to be available for the service.
Its structural layout is relatively simple, with a streamlined fuselage that takes up most of the aircraft's mass. The main wing plane is the only horizontal plane included in the design, these elements are located aft of the midship and provide the required flight control surfaces.
A single vertical fin is located at the rear of the fuselage. Internally, a conventional propulsion scheme appears to be used, with a multi-blade propeller unit located at the very end of the fuselage in a "thrust" fashion. The video shows Kian being launched into the air from its strut assembly (either on the ground or from the flatbed section of a truck) with rocket assistance while the thrust struts are active.
Once in the air (and possibly without rocket fuel), the aircraft moves to the target/target area under the power of its strut-driven engines.
Iranian Army officials have listed the kian as having an operational ceiling of 15,000 feet and a range of up to 620 miles. Design, development and testing are said to have been completed within 12 months.
However, as with other Iranian-born products, these statements and promotional videos should be taken with a grain of salt, given the countrys habit of showcasing entirely new domestic designs touting their precision through media releases and field exercises. and destruction skills without much evidence. So only time will tell if kian is more than just a propaganda tool.
