History of the Boeing 717

The Boeing 717 is an American twin-engine, single-aisle jet airliner designed for the 100-seat market. The five side-by-side aircraft were designed by McDonnell Douglas and originally marketed as the MD-95, a derivative of the DC-9 family.

The 717 seats up to 134 passengers and is designed to have a range of 2,060 nautical miles (3,820 km). It is powered by two Rolls-Royce BR715 turbofan engines mounted aft of the fuselage.

ValuJet Airlines (later AirTran Airways) placed its first order for the airliner with McDonnell Douglas in October 1995. The airliner entered service in 1999 as a Boeing 717 after McDonnell Douglas and Boeing merged before production in 1997. Production of the Boeing 717 ended in May 2006 after 156 prototypes were built.

As of July 2018, 148 Boeing 717s remained in service.
