Seaplanes played a low-key but very important role during World War II, and their long-range capabilities were put to good use. Airships emerged as a peacetime development, with their earliest forms appearing before the First World War (1914-1918), which allowed them to be used as military platforms in actual warfare. Their continued development, which soon resulted in proper tactics and doctrine, led to increasingly powerful designs, which soon came into beingespecially those that emerged in the United Kingdom and the United States.

With the outbreak of World War II, the role of airships expanded significantly to include surface patrol, reconnaissance, search and rescue (SAR), anti-submarine warfare, and anti-ship missions using a variety of ordnance such as bombs, torpedoes, and mines.

The PBY Catalina series became one of the most important American airships of World War II. The aircraft was designed, developed and produced in the United States under the United Aircraft Corporation brand label and soon appeared in other countries as a locally licensed product.

Its range also benefited from the Lend-Lease program, which ensured that the aircraft were kept in foreign inventories throughout the war.

The heart of the PBY Catalina is a high-wing twin-engine aircraft that can land on water or on prepared runways due to its boat/airplane-like characteristics. Catalina carries a crew of seven to nine, including pilots, engineers, bombardiers and gunners - the total crew varies by model.

As a prototype, the PBY first flew on March 28, 1935, beating competing Douglas aircraft products in competition. The production model was accepted (in the US Navy) as "PBY-1" in October 1936.

A wide variety of engines were installed during the war, defensive and offensive weapons were modified, and the role of the aircraft line steadily expanded. Tricycle chassis testing of the late PBY-4 will yield true amphibious PBY-5 and PBY-5A series models. Production of the PBY series will be carried out under Lend-Lease by Consolidated in the United States, Vickers and Boeing in Canada (620 examples), and state-owned plants in the Soviet Union (24 examples). In total, 3,305 PBY Catalina-based systems will be produced, 2,661 of which will come from the U.S. facility alone.

The Soviet Union named its Catalina "GST" (PBY-5), while the United Kingdom used the "Catalina Mk" identifier in the marks I to VI.

Airships will continue to play a key role in warfare, especially when it takes place over such different types of terrain, including long oceans. Catalinas served until 1979 before retiring from the Brazilian Navy. The French Catalinas served in Indochina for a while.

The other operators are Australia, Chile and Taiwan.

Many were in military and civilian service in the postwar period. There are other soldiers who continue to serve as fire platforms.

PBY-5A consists of a crew of 10. It was powered by 2 Pratt & Whitney R-1830-92 "Twin Wasp" radial piston engines, each producing 1,200 hp. The engines are mounted along the leading edge of the wing and can withstand the harsh salty sea air. Performance includes a top speed of 195 mph, a cruising speed of 125 mph, a range of up to 2,520 miles, a service ceiling of 15,800 feet and a rate of climb of 1,000 feet per minute.

Standard armament consists of 3 x .30 caliber machine guns (two in the nose and a third in the ventral position) and 2 x .50 caliber machine guns (one in each carrier position). Bomb loads up to 4,000 pounds of supplies - conventionally dropped bombs, torpedoes or depth charges are typical.
