History of the Gulfstream G400

The G400 is the latest addition to Gulfstream's proven line of business jets. The aircraft is designed with a focus on the large-cabin "business jet" market, with no compromise on performance and efficiency quality.

In October 2021, the Savannah, Georgia-based company introduced the genre alongside its larger cousin, the G800, which is detailed elsewhere on this site.

Externally, the G400 continues to rely on the proven physical aspects of other Gulfstream products; the fuselage is tubular and streamlined for high-speed flight, while the wing main aircraft is mounted low on either side of the mid-fuselage and swept back for high speeds flight. Additionally, each element is topped with a fuel-efficient winglet that blends elegantly into the design. The cockpit can seat two side by side before the sharp nose cone arrangement. The engine was placed at the rear of the design to reduce interior noise, and was mounted on an external short rear wing.

The fin consists of a "T-shaped" planar arrangement with a single vertical fin supporting the horizontal plane at the topmost edge of the fin. Ground travel is achieved by means of a conventional wheeled retractable tricycle undercarriage.

Inside the aircraft, the cabin/living area will be divided into three distinct areas in the entry layout: seating for up to 11 people, bedrooms for up to 4 people, a full toilet and a full kitchen. Ten cabin windows provide passengers with unparalleled views, while an air purification system purifies the cabin air every two minutes.

The cockpit features three large full-color touchscreens that display all relevant operational information on a state-of-the-art digitally controlled instrument panel to reduce crew workload and improve situational awareness at all stages of flight. The gas quadrant is located on a shared center console between the two crew members, and each pilot receives a side-mounted F-16-style flight stick.

Avionics is a symmetrical flight deck with a flight-phase intelligence system and a predicted landing performance system, the latter of which comes into play during approach.

As designed, the G400 has a maximum range of 4,835 miles (4,200 nmi) and is capable of approaching supersonic speeds of 0.90 (long-range cruise is set at around Mach 0.85). Beat the competition with nonstop flights from Sao Paulo (Brazil) to Miami (Florida) or Los Angeles (California) to Moscow (Russia).

The Bizjet will fly at an altitude of 51,000 feet.

Power is said to come from two Pratt & Whitney PW812GA non-afterburner turbofan engines designed for noise reduction, fuel economy and low emissions performance. Thrust is 13,500 lbs.

Structurally, the aircraft has a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 70,000 pounds and a maximum payload of 4,050 pounds. Overall length is 86.2 feet, height is 25.3 feet, and wingspan is 86.3 feet.
