History of the Cessna Citation Sovereign
The Cessna Citation Sovereign (Type 680) is an American business jet developed by Cessna and is part of the Cessna Citation family. Announced at the 1998 NBAA meeting, the Type 680 first flew in February 2002, was certified on June 2, 2004, and began deliveries in late September. The fuselage of the Citation Excel has been stretched and mated with new larger wings and more powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada PW306C engines for increased maximum takeoff weight and a range of 3,200 nautical miles (5,900 km).
Announced at NBAA in October 2012, the upgraded Sovereign+ will first fly in April 2013 and be delivered in December, with additional winglets and an upgraded cockpit and engine.
In the late 1990s, as demand dwindled, Cessna wanted to fill a gap in the mid-size lineup for its Cessna Citation III/VI/VII, with improved cabin comfort, performance and Practical, yet with Citation reliability, high runway performance and aerodynamic lift wings approaching transcontinental range to compete with the Hawker 800 and a thrust-to-weight ratio comparable to the climb performance of the Lear 60.
Announced at the 1998 NBAA conference, it first flew in February 2002 and deliveries began in late September 2004. FAA certification was obtained on June 2, 2004. EASA certification took place on March 31, 2005.
The upgraded Sovereign+ was announced at the NBAA in October 2012, launched in early March 2013, first flew in April, and after certification began deliveries on December 23, when the Sovereign fleet had flown 349 aircraft with 802,000 flight hours. The winglets offer increased range from 150 to 3,000 nmi (280 to 5,560 km), the new PW306D engine with autothrottle provides 5,852 lbf (26.03 kN) of thrust, a top speed of 458 kn (848 km/h) and direct FL450 Climb, full fuel payload has been increased, Garmin G5000 replaced avionics.
In March 2021, Cessna announced the discontinuation of Sovereign+ production to reduce market overlap between the Sovereign+ and the similarly capable but recently developed Citation Latitude and Citation Longitude. 349 Sovereign and 94 Sovereign+ aircraft were produced.
