History of Dewoitine D. 1 (Series)

Founded by Emile Dewoitine of France in October 1920, the Dewoitine company developed during the interwar period ("interwar" period) to become A well-known aircraft manufacturer) its most famous product eventually became the "D.520" in January 1940 (detailed elsewhere on this page), a fighter jet built from around 900 prototypes and defended in France against the onslaught of German invasion Used heroically during defeat. However, before this state-of-the-art monoplane could achieve war in time, the company had to contend with other evolutionary types - the first entry in the series became the "D.1" in 1922.

This aircraft was developed to meet the new requirements of French air service technology - the C.1 program of 1921.

The D.1 features an all-metal, metal-skin construction with a shoulder-mounted, braced, fabric-covered monoplane wing form. It retains the proven traditional "trailer" landing gear arrangement common in fighter jets of that era, with the empennage consisting of a small area rudder with a low horizontal plane.

The engine is mounted in the nose in the usual way to drive the two-bladed propeller. In an all-modern design at the time, Jager certainly showed promise.

For its combat role, the D.1 will carry a 2 x 7.7 mm (0.303 in) Vickers machine gun above the nose, which are fired synchronously by rotating propeller blades.

The first flight of the D.1.01 prototype was recorded on 18 November 1922, marking the first fighter to emerge from the enterprise. When built, the aircraft had a barrel length of 24.7 feet, a wingspan of 37.8 feet, and a height of 9 feet. Curb weight hits 1,810 pounds for a total of 2,735 pounds.

A 300-horsepower Hispano-Suiza 8Fb inline engine helped the plane reach a speed of 158 mph, a range of up to 250 miles, and an altitude of 26,245 feet. The climb rate is 1,475 feet per minute.

In testing, forward visibility proved to be poor, so a 4.76" pylon was placed between the wing main aircraft and the forward fuselage to create a see-through gap for the pilot - this change produced Parasol (high wing) D. 1bis from 1923.

While the French Air Force made no progress towards widespread adoption of the D.1, the French Navy adopted the type and commissioned about 30 examples (D.1ter), some of which were seen on aircraft carriers. Bearn" (detailed elsewhere on this site).
