History of the FVM J24

The FVM J23 fighter faced initial structural problems in its main-wing design, but its basic concept remained promising. FVM then pursued the J24, resembling its predecessor but adopting an older biplane wing configuration. However, the J24 failed to impress in a competition against the French Nieuport 29C biplane, which the Swedish Army preferred.

The J24 underwent modifications, including the addition of a lower wing, struts, and wires. It boasted a more powerful engine than the J23 and housed machine guns above the nose that synchronized with the propeller blades. Despite these improvements, the J24's performance lagged behind contemporaries due to excess weight. This setback marked the end of the J24 project, with the Nieuport 29C chosen instead.

Regrettably, the sole J24 prototype met its demise. Its final specifications included a length of 22.7 feet, a wingspan of 36.10 feet, and a height of 8.4 feet. Weighing 1,700 pounds unloaded and able to carry up to 2,175 pounds, it featured a BMW IIIa series engine. Capable of reaching a top speed of 122 mph and an altitude of 26,000 feet, the J24 fell short of expectations, concluding its development.
