History of the Mil Mi-34 (Hermit)

The Mi-34, NATO codenamed "Hermit", is a two- or four-seat light helicopter of the same class as the Gazelle, the Ecureuil, but powered by a piston engine power. The first of two prototypes, which first flew in 1986, was first introduced to the West at the Paris Air Show in June 1987. The Mi-34 competes with the Polish turbine-powered Swidnik SW-4 as a replacement for the heavily used outdated training helicopter fleet, such as the Mi-1. However, no decision has been made on the series production of "The Hermit".

A development is also underway to convert the Mi-34 into two 164 kW VAZ 430 rotary engines typically used to power VAZ vehicles powered by mogas. The first flight of the prototype, designated Mi-34V, was planned for 1993.
