Martin Model 201 History

During World War II (1939-1945), the Allied propeller fighters reached their peak, when air support using engines became particularly important over Rome, Berlin and Tokyo. These versatile machines are in high demand and need to deal with all types of ground targets - trains, warehouses, ships, etc.

For the United States, there has been no shortage of successful designs, including the classic Douglas A-26 Intruder twin-engine attack aircraft and modifications to successful models such as the North American B-25 Mitchell, another twin-engine type.

The United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) formed a massive strike group centered on a twin-engine model supported by multiple aircrews and extensive weapons support. As the war began in early 1939, the need for raiders evolved to the point where new designs were considered.

In mid-June 1943, the Glen L. Martin Company, familiar with successful aircraft designs, drew up plans for a new USAAC attack aircraft, the "Type 201", at the heart of which was the twin-engine concept that would allow two engines to work in tandem - this was in the nose A pair of four-bladed propellers are reverse driven.

This arrangement brings some inherent design advantages, as the wings do not need to support a dedicated engine nacelle structure, freeing up these elements for other important components, such as weapons. Additionally, this reduces drag along the forward area of ??the aircraft (i.e. a smaller profile), which has the potential intrinsic benefit of improving performance, while allowing additional internal volume for fuel reservoirs (consisting of self-sealing fuel tanks, over "wet wings" ).

Engines of choice were 2 Allison V-3420 liquid-cooled inline-piston engines, 2,850 hp each, and the experimental system first ran in 1937 and later powered the short-lived Fisher P-75. These large and powerful units will provide the aircraft with considerable power to power its twin-propeller array and ensure the high-speed operation of this rather advanced mid-sized platform.
