The Story of Curtis JN-4 (Jenny)
Everyone's favorite Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" two-seater trainer has seen countless uses during its operational life. The JN-4 proved to be an important "weapon" in World War I, just as it was a propaganda platform for civil aviation in the ensuing decade. "Jenny" gave many pilots in the US, Canada and the UK their first experience of powered flight, while training pilots in the intricacies of air gun firing, bombing, observation and basic aircraft operations. The plane proved perfect for aerobatics and helped establish the classic "barnstorming" era of the 1920s, which was popular at many air shows throughout the decade.
During the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), the US Army used the 1915 version of the JN-3 in the war with Pancho Villa. Over 6,800 Jennys were produced, many of which were part of the final JN-4D production model. The design of this aircraft is attributed to Benjamin D. Thomas.
The nickname "Jenny" was formed from the "JN" used in the aircraft name.
The JN-4 originated from a 1914 US Army request for a special two-seat training aircraft platform powered by a single-engine unit in a "tie rod" arrangement. The existence of the actual Curtiss JN-4 model is largely due to the development of the original Curtiss "J-Type" and "N-Type" aircraft that appeared before it. The J model is a traditional biplane powered by a Curtiss O-Series 90-hp inline engine, while the N-Series features a Curtiss OXX 100-hp inline engine. It was these two aircraft that formed the basis for the subsequent JN-1 brand, which was followed by the limited JN-2 biplane form.
The U.S. Army Signal Corps purchased several JN-2s, although these were ultimately deemed unsafe after a fatal accident. As an intermediate design, the outgoing JN-3 features unequal span biplane wings and sophisticated wing surface controls, which soon became the new JN standard for the previous JN-2. The design evolved into the eventual "JN-4," a designation that would make history in U.S. military aviation.
Such was its success, and an improved locally licensed production version in Canada - the JN-4 (Can) - soon came to fruition.
The design of the JN-4 was traditional for the time and featured the use of a staggered unequal span biplane wing arrangement with parallel struts and a two-cabin configuration. The engines are located at the very forward end of the slender hull, and two in-line cockpits (front for students and rear for instructors) are mounted aft of the nacelle and mid-front. Viewed from the side, the fuselage has a pleasing teardrop shape, extending from under the engine bay to the base of the tapered tail. The empennage consists of a circular rudder fin and a mounted fin. Each pilot sits in an open-air cockpit, protected only by the front windshield.
Visibility from the sides and rear is therefore quite good, although the front is mainly placed by the engine and both positions are affected by the large biplane wing structure. The landing gear consisted of two wheels with reinforced struts and cables, and a wooden tail skid under the tail.
Because the JN-4 is strictly a trainer, it is usually not equipped with any type of weapon.
The JN-4 (JN-4D) is powered by a 90 hp Curtiss OX-5 series 8-cylinder in-line V-engine. This gives the installation a top speed of 75 mph and a service cap of 6,500. Endurance is measured at 2 hours 15 minutes of flight time, while dimensions include a 43ft 8in wingspan and 9ft 10in length.
The JN-4 was responsible for training nearly 1 in 10 American pilots during its tenure, such is its importance and lasting legacy. The JN-4 provided many pilots with their first flight experience, thus proving as important as the United States entered World War I in 1917.
In addition to being used to train American pilots, the JN-4 served Canadians and British equally well. More advanced training included the use of machine guns and bomb weapons, but compared to the unarmed Jenny built, this variant rare. Some were used as air ambulances, greatly extending the tactical value of the JN-4.
All in all, the Jenny was the most important American biplane of World War I, although the types of fighters available were mostly foreign.
There are several notable variants of the JN-4, starting with the basic "JN-4" and then the example of the 781 "JN-4A", which were produced with increased area fins. The "JN-4B" brought back also uses a larger tail and is powered by Curtiss OX-2 series engines. 85 of this type were built for the U.S.
Army and Navy. The "JN-4C" was produced in two experimental models and was never mass-produced. A total of 1,260 "JN-4 (Canada)" were produced under an RFC license from Canadian Aircraft Corporation. It was largely based on the previous JN-3 model, with a lighter structure, improved lower wing assembly, and other Canadian-inspired improvements.
The "JN-4D" is a modified Jenny with Canadian JN-4 type joystick functionality while closely related to the earlier JN-4A brand. Approximately 2,765 examples of the brand were produced. A JN-4D-2 prototype completed with a modified engine mount.
The "JN-4H" is an advanced trainer version powered by a 150 hp Wright inline engine, with 929 examples delivered. Several sub-brands of this main brand subsequently appeared "JN-4HT" (General Trainer), "JN-4HB" (Bomber Trainer), "JN-4HG" (Artillery Trainer) and "JN-4HM" (communication platform)). ). "JN-5H" is an example token leading to JN-6.
The "JN-6" is an upgraded JN-5 of which 1,035 were produced for the U.S. Army and Navy. "JN-6H" marks an improved form of the JN-6, while the brand has also expanded to include dedicated bombing training aircraft (JN-6BH), general training aircraft (JN-6HG-1), artillery training aircraft (JN-6HG- 2). Observer training (JN-6HO) and combat training (JN-6HP). Over time, the name "JNS" was applied to hundreds of wartime jennys that were raised to 1920s standards.
At this point, the power output of the engine is almost doubled, resulting in improved performance and reliability.
Easy to fly and in the thousands, the JN-4 survived its wartime experience, seeing extensive service in private hands. Sheet music was sold to private operators who ensured the genre would stand the test of time.
Its use extends beyond famous veterans, as the plane was also purchased by Argentina and Cuba. She also served as the first U.S. mail plane to issue USPS commemorative stamps, resulting in the famous typographical error (extremely rare and popular) "Inverted Jenny."
Competitor "Standard J" biplane trainers attempted to take over the JN-4 family's reign as America's premier trainer and aerobatic aircraft. Although the aircraft itself produced more than 1,600 prototypes, it never quite reached the level of success that the JN-4 enjoyed during its life cycle.
