History of Stinson Reliant
Stinson Reliant was a pre-World War II product (1939-1945) for liaison and training roles. It takes the form of a shoulder-mounted monoplane with excellent lift, low-altitude handling and short-field capability.
1,327 prototypes of this type were produced in various variants and subsequently served a large number of global operators from Argentina and Australia to Paraguay and the United States.
The Stinson Aircraft Company was established in 1920 after World War I (1914-1918) and existed until after World War II in 1948. Headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, the company is known for many of his light aircraft concepts. His work can be seen on the shoulder-mounted wing main aircraft.
The company's first major contribution was the SB-1 "Detroit" - a single-engine cabin biplane - 26 of which were built from 1926 (eventually more than 100 aircraft were built under the Detroit name).
Production of the Reliant began in the pre-war years in 1931 and ended in 1943 when the war was in full swing. While many of the early models were designed for civilian use, the first dedicated military models were finally introduced in February 1942, when the American war machine required all types of aircraft to operate. Both the UK and the US rely on light aircraft to survey battlefields, conduct reconnaissance flights, communicate and transport passengers back and forth. For the latter, the aircraft was designated UC-81 and AT-19, denoting utility and instructor roles, respectively.
The United States and other wartime military powers used several aircraft that mimicked the form and function of the Reliant.
The number of variants of the Reliant allows the aircraft to perform a variety of roles, including general cargo transport, air ambulance, photographic reconnaissance, firefighting and target towing. The civilian market line began with the SR Reliant, a form factor powered by a 215-horsepower Lycoming R-680 radial piston engine. It was followed by the SR-1 with a 240-horsepower Lycoming R-680-2 engine - two were built.
Since then, other brands have appeared from the SR-3 to the SR-10K, the latter powered by the Wright R-760E-3 engine - a total of 11 of these brands were produced.
The production SR-10F carries a crew of up to four passengers. Dimensions include a barrel length of 27.10 feet, a wingspan of 41.6 feet and a height of 8.5 feet. Curb weight is 3,045 lbs and maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) is 4,605 ??lbs.
Power comes from a Pratt & Whitney "Wasp Junior" SB 9-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engine producing 400 horsepower and driving a two-bladed propeller unit in the nose. In this configuration, the aircraft can handle a cruise speed of nearly 177 mph, a range of up to 850 miles and a service ceiling of up to 21,000 feet.
The climb rate is 1,330 feet per minute.
Military branding began with the AT-19, designated by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) and operated by the Royal Navy as "Reliant I" through a Lend-Lease agreement - a total of 500 were produced. 51 AT-19s were converted to AT-19Cs for photogrammetry missions. The utility brand started with the UC-81 and extended to the UC-81N. The L-12 is a pair of SRs.
The 5A variant in USAF service was accepted, while the L-12A was a pair of SR-7Bs. The RQ-1 was used to designate the one-off SR-5 model adopted by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1935 - which was eventually renamed the XR3Q-1 and operated by the U.S. Navy until 1941.
