History

The Saab ASC 890 is an airborne early warning and control aircraft based on the Saab 340 turboprop platform. It combines the aircraft with the PS-890 Erieye active electronically scanned array radar to provide long-range airborne surveillance and command-and-control functions.

The type is also associated with the Saab 340 AEW&C and Swedish S 100B Argus designations. A 2024 Ukrinform report described the ASC 890 as having been in service since 1997.

The ASC 890 gained a new operational role after Sweden announced the transfer of two aircraft to Ukraine in May 2024. Ukraine later confirmed that former Swedish Air Force ASC 890 aircraft were being used for airborne command and control during the Russia-Ukraine war.

Transfer to Ukraine

On 29 May 2024, Sweden announced a military assistance package for Ukraine that included two Saab 340-based ASC 890 aircraft. The package was intended to provide Ukraine with an airborne surveillance and combat-management capability for detecting and coordinating responses to threats in the air and at sea.

In March 2025, Sweden stated that the delivery schedule remained linked to preparations involving modifications of Ukrainian F-16 fighters and that the transfer had not been delayed. The Swedish authorities did not disclose detailed timing or transfer locations for security reasons, according to UNITED24 Media.

On 4 September 2026, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the former Swedish aircraft had been providing airborne command and control to Ukrainian combat aircraft since March 2026. The ministry said the ASC 890 could detect air targets at considerable distances, coordinate combat aircraft and improve fighter effectiveness.

Design

The ASC 890 uses the Saab 340 twin-engine turboprop as its aircraft platform. The surveillance system is distinguished by a long fixed radar structure installed above the fuselage rather than a rotating radar dome.

Airframe and propulsion

The aircraft is powered by two General Electric CT7-9B turboprop engines. Published specifications give each engine an output of approximately 1,390 kW or 1,870 hp. The Saab 340-based configuration has a length of 20.57 m, a wingspan of 21.44 m and a height of 6.97 m.

The reported crew is six. An empty weight of 10,300 kg is given in the available technical material. Published sources contain conflicting figures for gross or take-off weight, so those values are not combined here.

PS-890 Erieye radar

The ASC 890 designation is associated with the Ericsson, later Saab Surveillance, PS-890 Erieye radar. The S-band active electronically scanned array is installed in a long dorsal structure above the fuselage. Janes describes this radar structure as 9.7 m long, while a 2024 Ukrinform graphic gives a rounded antenna-container length of 9 m.

The radar uses electronic beam steering instead of mechanically rotating its antenna. Janes reports coverage of 150-degree sectors to port and starboard, with one side covered at a time, and a stated range of up to 450 km at an altitude of 20,000 ft. It also reports limited scanning capability toward the front and rear of the aircraft.

Other published figures differ. UNITED24 Media reported 120-degree coverage on each side and detection distances of approximately 300 to 400 km while operating at an altitude of about 6,000 m. These published figures should therefore be treated as source-specific descriptions rather than a single fixed radar specification.

Command and control role

The aircraft is intended to extend surveillance beyond the limits of ground-based sensors by operating its radar at altitude. Its mission includes detection of airborne targets and the transmission of situational information for combat coordination. Ukrainian authorities specifically confirmed its use for coordinating combat aircraft.

Ukraine described the ASC 890 as part of a networked air-combat system involving F-16 and Mirage 2000 fighters, with Gripen aircraft also referenced in the Ukrainian statement as a future element.

Operational history

The Swedish Air Force operated ASC 890 aircraft before Sweden selected examples for transfer to Ukraine. Ukrinform reported in 2024 that Sweden had two aircraft of the type and that Thailand and Poland also operated Saab 340 AEW&C aircraft. The same report identified Greece and the United Arab Emirates as former operators.

Ukraine became a confirmed operational user during the Russia-Ukraine war. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense statement reported in September 2026, the transferred aircraft had been supporting Ukrainian combat aviation with airborne command and control since March 2026.
