History
The Saturn AL-31 is a family of axial-flow turbofan engines developed by the Lyulka-Saturn design bureau in the Soviet Union, now NPO Saturn in Russia. Design of the AL-31 began in the 1970s as a powerplant for the Sukhoi T-10 prototype, which entered service as the Su-27. The AL-31F reached initial operational capability in 1981. The AL-31FP variant reached initial operational capability in 2005 and is manufactured by NPO Saturn in Russia.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) assembles the AL-31FP under Russian license at its Koraput facility in India, with support from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The Koraput division delivered its 2,000th aero-engine, an AL-31FP, during a 2024 inspection. In September 2024, the Indian government signed a contract with HAL for 240 additional AL-31FP engines valued at INR 260 billion (US$3.1 billion), to be delivered over eight years starting in 2025.
Design
The AL-31FP is an afterburning turbofan equipped with thrust vector control. It produces a full afterburner thrust of 12,500 kg-force (122.6 kN; 27,560 lbf), compared to 14,500 kg-force (142.2 kN) for the AL-31FS variant. The engine powers the Sukhoi Su-30MKI in pairs. The Indian production workshare reached 50 percent by October 2024, against an original contract target of 54 percent; HAL has expressed confidence in reaching 63 percent.
Operational history
The AL-31FP has powered the Indian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30MKI fleet since 2005. India operates approximately 260 Su-30MKIs, and the type is expected to remain in service until the middle of the century. Plans exist to upgrade about 84 Su-30MKIs. HAL shipped 63 engines by the end of the second contract year under the 2024 order, ahead of the planned 60. Following an investment of INR 3.4 billion (US$37 million), HAL will increase annual AL-31FP production capacity from 30 to 50 engines. The Koraput facility also supports a supplier network and provides engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul capabilities for the Indian aerospace sector.
