History of the Douglas F4D / F-6 Skyray
The F4D Skyray (affectionately known as "Ford" because of the "F", "Four" and "D" used in its name) originated in 1947 when the U.S. Navy launched a competitive Mach 1 high-altitude interceptor. Demand.
In order not to be overtaken by their Air Force counterparts developing their North American F-100 Super Sabre program and the competing Soviet Union and their Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-19 "Peasant" designs, the US Navy set out to create an equivalent force to defend Their Discovery Carrier Strike Group.
The design of the Skyray originated indirectly from German delta wing research during World War II, especially the work of German engineer Alexander Lippisch. After the war ended in 1946, Lipisch moved to the United States, and his work was not neglected by the U.S. Navy. Legendary Douglas Aircraft Company designer Ed Heinemann is a shrewd admirer of Lippisch's work, which centers on the concept of a tailless delta aircraft???.
Lippisch's work produced the famous Me 163 Komet single-seat rocket-powered interceptor for the German company Messerschmitt in the last years of the war. His pioneering research drove the development of aircraft design, especially as turbojet technology evolved into more powerful engines, providing enough power for new and better airframe types. The tailless delta wing concept was one of Lippisch's revolutionary attempts to curb the violent reactions encountered by objects exceeding the speed of sound. Regardless of the powerplant chosen, the inherent stability and aerodynamic capabilities of large surfaces provide some inherent advantages to any design.
In theory, this would fit nicely into the booming world of jet design, given that the field of jet technology is still in its infancy.
On June 17, 1947, the Douglas Aircraft Company completed its proposal for the delta wing concept, a unique concept that the U.S. Navy began to favor. The original Douglas D-571-1 program was selected for further development and the D-571-4 was produced.
The D-571-1 had straighter delta wings, while the D-571-4 differed by having rounded delta wing edges, consistent with production Skyrays. On December 16, 1949, the U.S.
Navy awarded Douglas a contract for two XF4F-1 prototypesat the time, the aircraft was branded the "Skyray" due to its similarity to the ocean-going manta ray. The prototype flew for the first time on January 23, 1951, and proved to be a promising proposition.
The XF4D-1 was originally designed around the dynamic Westinghouse J40 series of engines, although the technical foresight of Douglas engineers ensured that the airframe could accommodate a variety of engines as needed. While development of the XF4D-1 airframe went well, the Westinghouse J40 proved to be a completely different thing.
The Westinghouse J40 eventually faltered (resulting in an accident in the area and the F3H Demon series), although the US Navy forced Skyray to accept the now USN approved Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojet - a personal decision that likely saved the aircraft from being a forgotten The and possibly even canceled Cold War design. Although Pratt & Whitney's J57 proved to be a larger engine than Westinghouse, the extra space the Douglas designers allowed from the start ensured that the J57 would fit nicely into the airframe, and the Skyray program wasn't much delayed.
Ultimately, the performance of the Douglas product reached a top speed of 722 miles per hour. Because sustained Mach 1 speeds are part of the USN requirement, the Skyray excels. Throughout its life cycle, Skyray has been equipped with multiple Pratt & Whitney engines, including the J57-P-8, J57-P-8A and J57-P-8B models.
These engines are rated at 10,200 lbf dry thrust, with the afterburner rising to an impressive 16,000 lbf. The ferry has a range of 1,200 miles and a range of up to 700 miles. Service is reportedly capped at 55,000 feet, which fits nicely with the U.S. Navy's earlier requirements.
Most importantly, however, is the Skyray's impressive 18,300 feet per minute rate of climb. The concept of a slow-climbing interceptor was never considered in the jet era (or any era), and the Skyray doesn't disappoint in that performance category.
The Skyray itself consists of a semi-loaded skin containing an aluminum alloy. Despite its large wing area, every effort has been made to eliminate excess weight in the design. This is where Douglas designer Ed Heinemann shines. The delta wing concept applied to the Skyray proved to be the most efficient in both construction method and high-speed performance. At the heart of the design is the slender fuselage, which is integrated into two thick wing roots, each containing a triangular air intake for the Pratt & Whitney J57 series single afterburner engines.
The wings extend from the roots and the whole provides a very solid structural base. The wing gives the aircraft a recognizable and defined shape, with its sharply curved leading edge nicely rounded at the wingtip.
A tailless delta concept, the Skyray does not use rear fin surfaces consistent with traditional aircraft designs (as these are essentially absorbed as part of the larger delta fin surfaces), and has a large vertical fin surface that extends to the engines and rear torso a part of.
The pilot gets the best seat in the house, with the cockpit in front of the fuselage. The cockpit has a relatively heavy frame, but still has a good view outside. The canopy is contoured to seamlessly integrate the cockpit with the rear fuselage of the aircraft. The nose extends only slightly forward of the cockpit. Cockpit avionics include APQ-50A series radar systems.
The landing gear is a traditional tricycle design, with the two main landing gear hidden under the wings and the nose wheels stowed under the forward fuselage.
Standard armament consists of 4 Mk 12-0 series 20mm cannons. Two of these systems are mounted on the underside of the leading edge of each wing, and one cannon has 65 projectiles. Since the Skyray's design is primarily full-wing, these wings are expected to carry a lot of ammunition to handle the workload ahead.
As a result, Skyray can deploy unguided missile pods on up to six hardpoints, depending on their size (and thus weight). It can carry six 2.75-inch rocket pods, each holding seven rockets, or four 2.75-inch rocket pods, each holding 19 rockets. The Skyray can also carry 2 x 2,000 lb bombs or equivalent. More importantly for a Cold War-era interceptor, the F4D can also be armed with a pair of AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missiles.
Fire control is handled by the Aero 13F series fire control radar system.
There is no doubt that the F4D is the US Navy's answer to a full performance platform. Skyray is an outright interceptor, which explains the short lifespan of this type.
Skyray is not in the same category as subsequent designs, which are more of a strong design concept for a fighter-bomber and multiple characters. Built for the speed of the USN, the F4D did not disappoint, being a unique and revolutionary move for the service industry.
Regardless, this is a solid development in the design of future USN fighter implementations.
On October 3, 1953, Douglas Skyray set a new world airspeed record at 752.9 miles per hour, proving the design had reliable performance at a high level. The combination of a delta wing and a powerful engine delivered great results, especially in the rate-of-climb category.
The Skyray set another aerial record, reaching an altitude of 49,221 feet in 2 minutes 36 seconds, and the aircraft has held no fewer than five such records over its lifetime.
On June 5, 1954, the first F4D-1 produced set a new standard for the world (and for itself, basically), becoming the first aircraft to maintain a speed of Mach 1 in level flight, proving Having a delta wing design so robust has the potential to achieve excellent performance specifications. However, this next-gen design is not without flaws.
It was soon discovered that the plane had stalled in a potentially fatal high altitude, with potentially catastrophic consequences for the pilot and airframe. As a result, the plan was shelved for several years until the issue was resolved and the design for the USN service was approved.
Skyray entered service with the US Navy's VC-3 Squadron (later VFAW-3) in April 1956 as an F4D-1. At its peak, 17 U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps squadrons and three reserve units deployed the aircraft.
In total, at least 419 F4D-1 models were produced, making it the most numerous and essentially the only major Skyray model in service. All F4D-1 models were designated F-6A after 1962. Likewise, the two XF4D-1 prototype names have now been updated to the YF-6A designation.
All Skyrays were produced from 1950 to 1958.
The F4D-2 is the proposed Skyray variant with the J57-F-14 series engine. Ultimately, the order was completely cancelled despite at least 100 being ordered. The F4D-2N became another proposed Skyray variant. The planes will have longer nose sections to accommodate two radar scanners.
Although the model later became the F5D Skylancer, the project was never fully developed and only four examples were produced.
The Skyray was used by the US Navy and the US Marine Corps, but the latter later became the F-6. Despite its promising design and outstanding performance, the pure interceptor mode of combat has gradually left the picture of modern air combat. More capable platforms are on the horizon, or appear every year, carrying more real fighter-bombers than the Skyray can match in its limited design philosophy.
As such, the Skyray was only used for a few years as an operational front-line fighter. All Skyrays were officially retired in 1964. The U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps are actually the only two operators of the aircraft, as no global sales have been sought or secured.
The technological frontier is changing so quickly. The last operational squadron to use the Skyray became the VMF-542 in 1964. In addition, NACA (the predecessor of NASA) used four samples for testing.
Despite inherent limitations, Ed Heinemann won the coveted Collier Trophy for his design work on the Skyray, a testament to pioneering fighter jet design (the Collier Trophy is an annual aviation Award, which recognizes achievements in aerospace and aeronautics). Since 1911. Winners include Glenn Martin for his work on the Martin B-10 bomber, the Rutan Voyager team and the F-22 Raptor team. The F4D/F-6 Skyray never took part in combat missions during its tenure, was used too late in the Korean War (although still in development during the conflict), and outperformed during the Vietnam War.
Still a beautiful aircraft, the F4D marked a memorable new chapter in U.S. Navy aircraft design, opening the door to spearheading the next generation of utility jets.
