History of the Battle of Fairey

The Fairey Battle was a pre-war British light bomber that proved to be a step forward for the nation when it was designed in the early to mid-1930s. However, it was quickly eliminated in the fighting of World War II (1939-1945), and it had little advantage over the more agile enemy fighters deployed by the Germans. Still, with no better options, combatants and British war planners persevered, and eventually production would run into the thousands.

The aircraft was used by several major air forces in the conflict and was not officially retired until the late 1940s.

Combat stems from page 27/32 of the 1933 specification calling for a light two-seat bomber to replace the aging Hawker biplane. At this time in history, British thinking was centered on a compact light bomb-dropping platform, and France was Britain's future enemy - so range proved unimportant. The famous Fairey Company brought a modern two-seat low-wing monoplane, which made its maiden flight on March 10, 1936. As the aircraft has increased in altitude, it has changed significantly from its original orientation and now includes a larger bomb load capacity as well as a third crew member to take on more of the operational workload.

This forced a long, slender fuselage and a long-running greenhouse-like canopy, changes that sadly increased the expected weight of the fuselage, resulting in reduced performance.

Before the completed prototype (K4303) even flew, the Air Force ordered 155 modern aircraft to make up for its superior biplanes during the interwar period (many air forces installed full metal enclosures during this period) cockpit aircraft) . . Although the commanders who would manage the fleet throughout the war were aware of the design constraints, production proceeded at the fastest pace and the number of orders increased. The 63rd Squadron became the first recipient of the aircraft in May 1937, as Europe became more unstable, and by September 1939 the Royal Air Force (RAF) stockpile had reached 1,000, ready for total war.

Prepare. The original variants were simply called "Battle Mk I", and they were powered by a 1,030-horsepower Rolls-Royce Merlin I inline engine - the same engine that would make the Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire stars in due course. Weapons are only 1x. The 303 (7.7 mm) Browning machine gun was mounted on a fixed forward mount along the leading edge of the right wing, and a Vickers K machine gun was mounted aft of the cockpit.

Combat managed an internal bomb load of 4 x 250 lb conventionally thrown bombs and an additional 500 lb external storage.

World War II (1939-1945) began on September 1, 1939, when German troops began their campaign to conquer Europe and invade sovereign Poland. A few weeks later, they were joined by a Soviet offensive in the east, splitting Poland in two.

Before the invasion, the British had placed about 10 squadrons of Fairey Battles on French soil in preparation for battle.

When Battles was put to the test, it proved to be an outdated aircraft - too slow to fight enemy fighter jets, and too light in bomb load to be an effective attack aircraft. It does lack self-defense capabilities, its size is disadvantageous to the crew, provides good targeting, and exposes many vulnerable enemy approach angles. Left to its own devices, combat is worse on mission than escorted by fighter jets - combat is neither a true bomber nor a dedicated fighter, but an outdated crossroads in the coming war on mobile fronts almost worthless.

On a mission in September 1939, German Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters successfully completed five battles - an advantage that German fighters had against unprotected attack aircraft.

The original Mk I variant was followed by the slightly improved Battle Mk II, with its Rolls-Royce Merlin II inline engine producing 1,030 hp. Performance includes a top speed of 257 mph and a range of up to 1,000 miles.

Service is capped at 25,000 feet with a climb rate of approximately 1,250 feet per minute.

The Mk V then went live, and the brand introduced the Merlin V-series engine. Modified "Battle T" trainer model created from the Mk I, Mk II and Mk V series. The "Battle IT" trainer installed a turret for aerial fire at the rear of the fuselage. The "Battle IIT" that appeared in October 1940 was a one-off Mk I with an American Wright Cyclone R1820-G38 engine in case Rolls-Royce Merlins became scarce during the war.

Others were used as target tugs - "Battle TT" and "Battle TT. Mk I".

As the Germans passed through Holland and eventually France in May 1940, the battle kept being pushed into action, simply for the lack of a more viable alternative in increasingly desperate conditions. Combat was carried out with armed reconnaissance/patrol and strikes where possible, and there was still an additional threat from ground anti-aircraft fire, resulting in increasing casualties. The Germans, with their rapid blitzkrieg, forced Allied war planners to keep up with the changing situation on all fronts.

During a mission in May 1940, Axis fighters lost dozens of battles, further reducing the combat value of the genre. With the fall of important supply ports along France and the English Channel, the aircraft joined other military equipment that had survived on British soil.

Despite this move and their disastrous action, the campaign continued for the remainder of 1940. The objectives became the axial positions across the English Channel for which the battle was originally designed.

However, the results did not improve and the line was withdrawn from first-line service by the end of the year. The remaining inventory is then used for airsoft training characters and target tugs.

Combat was officially retired in 1949, long after the war ended in 1945. Although their total production was 2,185 pieces (manufactured from 1937 to 1940), only five survive today as protected museum exhibits (2014).

In addition to service with the RAF, the aircraft also stockpiles Australia, Belgium, Canada, British India, Ireland (single target tug example), Greece, the Polish Free Army, South Africa and Turkey. Manufacturers include Fairey itself, Avions Fairey (Gosley, Belgium) and Austin Motors

About 26 RAF squadrons took part in the battle. Fleet Aviation (FAA) saw additional service.
