History of the Gloucester Javelin
The Gloucester Javelin was the first twin-engine delta-wing jet fighter design to enter service with the Air Force. The system also became the UK's first all-weather day and night fighter and was the last production design of the famous WWII power plant company Gloucester.
The Javelin is a two-seat turbojet fighter designed to fulfill the role of an all-weather interceptor for the Royal Air Force. The system had been produced in 1948, but was not used until 1956.
Meanwhile, three prototypes and pre-production aircraft were lost in maneuvers that required a complete redesign of the aircraft. At the end of the design, the system will deploy a full delta wing surface structure attached to two Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire turbojets with the main tail consisting of a high-mounted elevator assembly with rudders.
At the time of production, the Javelin was one of the most technologically advanced aircraft of its time. The system's ability to see and attack in all weather conditions, day or night, is a considerable advantage when used against weaker enemies. The system was equipped with a conservative 2 x 20mm artillery array and had to wait until FAW.
The Mk 7 saw the implementation of the air-to-air infrared homing missile in 1958, completing the transition from the post-war design to a more modern fighter. Later variants, the Javelin system will be deployed with onboard refueling probes and drop tanks, which will significantly increase the aircraft's overall combat radius.
In its current form, the Javelin has maintained a successful service record, being used by as many as 14 squadrons in the Royal Air Force alone. The system would remain in production until 1967, when the Javelin would be replaced by more modern turbojet and turbofan fighter jets - ultimately ending one of the most successful aerospace companies in history.
