Grumman F2F History
Leroy Grumman designed this fat biplane for the US Navy. Grumman had already established an enduring image for his company with the design of the FF-1, a similar two-seat biplane that proved to be quite fast at the time. As a result, the U.S.
Navy had little qualms about ordering Grumman's new XF2F-1. A total of 55 F2F-1 production fighters were delivered. One was added to an initial order of 54 to replace the crashed F2F-1. The F2F had a short lifespan from 1935 to 1940 by today's standards, and was no doubt superseded by more advanced systems that appeared in the United States during the war.
The system first flew on October 31, 1933, and deliveries began on January 19, 1935. Design by Leroy Grumman himself.
At its core, the F2F is an aircraft design that seems to be sandwiched between two aviation eras. It had an open-air cockpit and staggered, uneven biplane wing assemblies supported by parallel struts and cables, with the pilot sitting directly aft of the upper wing. The F2F was distinguished by its stately airframe, which housed the then experimental single Pratt & Whitney XR-1534-44 Twin Wasp Junior radial piston engine. Performance includes a top speed of 238 mph, a range of 985 miles and a service ceiling of 27,500 feet.
However, as an interwar aircraft design, the F2F was a hot rod.
Like other Grumman designs of the time, the landing gear was retractable, although even fully retracted the wheels on either side of the forward fuselage were clearly visible. The landing gear is conventional, with two main landing gear and a tail wheel. F2F is designed for operations originating from aircraft carriers or land-based airfields.
Weapons are limited to 2 x 7.62mm machine guns mounted in the hood. The plane is also designed to be waterproof in case the plane has to make an emergency landing in the ocean - after all, it's a Navy plane.
By September 1940, this small design met its fate and was replaced by a much improved aircraft. The US is the only carrier of this type. The Grumman F3F is another similar biplane design that was developed from the F2F and became the last American biplane to enter operational service.
